This book takes an often tongue-in-cheek look at alliances between American women seeking respectability marrying English noblemen seeking cash. The tone of the book is fun and sometimes gossipy, but don't be fooled. The background material on the history of England and America in the late Nineteenth century is worth the price of the book alone.
A simply fascinating book.

This book is very amusing, with a tongue in cheek style and great fondness for "Bertie", packed with facts and illustrations but really difficult to read. Double page spreads of related information disturb the narrative flow and I found I was constantly having to look back to remember where I was and who people were. It's richly illustrated with lots of little margin notes as well as these interuptions to the main text so I cannot imagine how anyone would cope with a Kindle version .... buy the book and dip into it, it is worth the effort, but if you to read straight historical narrative maybe look elsewhere

I loved this book which I initially bought as a background read to the Downton Abbey series. It is really a very thorough historical research into the over 100 matches that were made between American heiresses and English nobles. While it is wonderfully gossipy and funny on the one hand, it also examines the drawbacks and unhappiness that resulted from some of the marriages. Additionally, many photos add interest and give life to the characters and places mentioned in the book, so that you can hardly put it down once you have started. Thoroughly recommended!

This book is great fun if you love romance novels and/or history. It focuses on the time right at the end of the nineteenth century --- this was when rich Americans eager for new worlds to conquer searched for titled Englishmen as husbands for their single daughters. The book is packed with lots of great trivia and some wonderful details -- you will learn about the marriages that produced the ilk of Winston Churchill (Jennie Randolph was his mother) and Gloria Vanderbilt.

Loved this account of those that crossed the seas to embrace everything British, even if it led to misery, divorce or both. The book is laid out with facts, trivia, details and pictures for a visual mix of all. I was using it as research, but can see how this would appeal to anyone interested in the turn of the century with good follow up and references to further reading and movies besides.

I really enjoyed this well written book about all the things I like, relationships between nobility and their lifestyle, these women were often married by arrangement and ended up having a poor life amongst immense luxury it was very good.

I liked this a lot. Very fun cultural history. It is easily written so it works also for those not so accutomed to history books. A good book to read if you love f ex downton abbey and want to linger in that kind of world although this book covers a larger period of time and from an american angle.

Lots of trivia about the US and its wealthy families and the habits of the "aristocracy" on both sides of the Atlantic. The print is too small and occasionally the even more trivial knowledge makes it hard to follow the original story.
