5.0 out of 5 stars Getting married in the 21st Century, 17 Jun 2008
By J. S. Romney ""Angel"" (uk) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
My fiancée and I are Christians and really wanted in addition to our Pre- marriage counselling a book did not offer a "pop psychological" answer for every situation but a book that got down to the heart of married life from a biblical perspective.

This book does this and it challenges you to take a closer look at marriage it demographic includes from those embarking, those who are already in a lifelong commitment and single folk. It places a healthy focus on being complete in Jesus Christ and looking to Him to be your all and as you grow in your relationship with Him, when or if He brings a mate your way, your attitude will be that this person a gift and it will avoid you falling into idolatry.

Since the focus is the relationship you have with Jesus and a by-product of this relationship is fulfilling all the commands that he has set out in His word concerning marriage.

This is a most excellent find and I encourage those whose are engaged, married and single to read this book it will change the way you see the institution.

4.0 out of 5 stars A helpful look at God-centred marriage from the Conservative Evangelical tradition, 21 Sep 2007
By Helen Hancox "Auntie Helen" (Essex, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This book started off excellently with the first chapter firmly putting God in the centre. This book, unlike so many Christian and secular marriage books, considers marriage should have God in the centre and it's not about "what I can get out of it". The book isn't a step-by-step guide to a successful marriage but discusses the underlying biblical themes and how to relate them to relationships in the 21st century.

Unfortunately for me this book was set in a very specific theological framework (conservative evangelical) and there were parts of it with which I disagreed which spoiled the overall effect. The author deals with some difficult subjects (submission of women, that people who don't want children shouldn't marry) and also glancingly mentions some others (homosexuality, divorce, acceptable methods of contraception) within his conservative tradition in a rather over-simplistic way (to this reader, at least). He briefly touches on singleness but the main thrust of the book is the importance of God at the centre of marriage and that marriage is about having children. It's well written but I think would appeal mainly to those from his tradition because of the awkward nature of some of his pronouncements about current issues.
