4.0 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect 1 May 2002
By Mouser - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This book starts off action packed. "Yancey" is a female Pinkerton agent who's being hunted by British Assassins. At the same time, a woman of the same name, Sarah Calhoun, is murdered in Chicago and a Dowager Duchess in England pleads for Yancey to come. Yancey's identity is mistaken for the American duchess of the same name who's missing.
To investigate it all, Yancey travels to England to find out if the sexy Duke Samuel or his mother are behind the murder, and to solve the disappearance of the missing duchess.
It starts off action packed with a great heroine who's all walk and little talk. Then she meets the duke and dissolves into a simpering mass of the worst of female qualities, which made me roll my eyes.
The middle lags because of it but soon she's back on the case and it picks up. A worthwhile read...

3.0 out of 5 stars Premise good, but never lives up to it! 26 Jan 2003
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
The premise was good with this book and I was looking forward to reading it. Basically, an agent is mistaken for an English duke's now dead wife and goes to England to discover the duchess' nurderer while masquerading as the duchess.

The problem with this book is that it does not live up to its interesting premise. It was not engaging in any way - the writing, hero, heroine or plot. I was not pulled into the story and instead, I pulled my way through it.

It's fine for a Sunday afternoon light read but not a book for stirring great emotions or interest, I fear.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too drawn out. 17 Oct 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This is a story that starts out OK, but fizzles. I liked the characters, but they never stopped talking. There was no tension, or suspense--once the plot moved from the U.S. to England the villians were obvious. I found myself skipping pages to get to some action. There is some humor, but not enough. Also, the ending seemed a little rushed and contrived.
