Product Description

Funny, gorgeous, seriously sexy Aaron would be the perfect boyfriend - were it not for two minor character flaws: his all-consuming terror of commitment and his complete inability to remain faithful. Nevertheless, with his girlfriend Jeena faced with exile to India, Aaron conquers his deep-seated fears and agrees to marry her - for one year only. It's an arrangement between friends, that's all. After one year, they will divorce - and things will be back to normal. But it was never going to be that easy. Aaron knows nothing of the Indian way, its culture, its rituals, its idealism. When Aaron marries Jeena, he marries her extended family too. The crises, chaos and complications that follow make for a witty and hilarious read. And despite his best intentions, love has a way of creeping up on a man just when he least expects it...

About the Author

A former employee of the Inland Revenue and an avid reader, Nisha couldn't find any novels that really appealed to her, a young woman born in the UK of Indian parents. So she bravely left her job, determined to write the book that she herself would love to read. The result was Nisha's first novel: the hilarious CHAPATTI OR CHIPS? Nisha lives in Milton Keynes with her partner and two cats. Visit www.nishaminhas.co.uk

4.0 out of 5 stars Funny but a little annoying..., 21 Sep 2007
This review is from: The Marriage Market (Paperback)
Just finished reading this book and on a whole I really enjoyed it. It was extremely funny in parts and the characters were all really likeable. Where I would give the thumbs down to this book is in the prejudices it holds against the Sikh society; I've never known anything like it! Especially being written by an Asian author I would have hoped for less of the clichés and generalisation.

Within the first few pages of the book I found the author to be ignorant by calling the Indian grand mother `Nanaji' when in fact that is the name given to a grandfather - if this wasn't ignorance I would have thought a bit more research could have been carried out.

Also the Sikh society (of which I am part) was described as archaic to say the least! I don't know and have never known anybody who has suffered the way in which was described as the norm in the Sikh society today. I heard this kind of thing could have been prevalent in some families about 30 years ago but here Nisha Minhas tarred everybody with the same brush which got very annoying.

This did rile me but I persevered and I'm glad I did because overall the humour and the story outline more then made up for the ignorance of the author. I would recommend it if you can ignore the above.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quite a funny read, 17 Sep 2008

I found this book to be really funny at certain points, but the drawback is that Nisha Minhas has overly stereotyped 'Indians' and most Sikhs are nothing like how she has portrayed them in this book.

All that aside, it's a good book and worth the read.

3.0 out of 5 stars The marriage market, 14 Jan 2010
By

This review is from: The Marriage Market (Paperback)
Nisha Minhas writes well, all her books are enjoyable to read due to a combination of likeable characters and having often humouras storylines, this book is no exception.

However I did tire of Minhas portaying the Sikh community as though they are stuck in the 50s, when in reality this is not the case.
