I've only had this little white noise generator for a few months but I'm already pleased I bought it. I was highly sceptical about the device but had read such favourable reviews, notably on the American amazon.com where there are hundreds of satisfied customers, that I thought it was worth trying for the reasonable price. I'm glad I did.

I live in a community where there is a lot of potential for noise at night, mainly from other residents. I have excellent hearing, and over the years, I've become hyper-sensitive to noise, almost obsessional. I also have mild tinnitus. I tend to "listen" for noises, focus on them, rather than ignore them. After a while, I can get very stressed and subjectively the disturbance seems to get louder and louder; I simply can't switch my brain off.....consequently, I get little or no sleep when this happens. Sometimes, I even dread going to bed in case the noises start again. I don't find earplugs comfortable and anyway they sometimes trigger my tinnitus problem.

The Sleepmate was suggested to me. It looks like a round, white plastic box, similar in size to a small cake tin, which plugs into the mains. The UK version has a 2 metre cable with a 3-pin UK plug. There are 3 simple controls - an on-off/speed switch, an outer ring or collar which adjusts volume and a rotating cover on top which adjusts the tone. It sounds like a fan: a mechanical hum with the sound of rushing air. I read somewhere that it is best positioned at ear level and away from you in the room - mine is on a chest of drawers about 3 metres from my bed. I accustomed myself for a couple of weeks to its sound by using it only when I have a nap as it takes a while to get used to.....just like another irritating noise at first!

We've had our sound conditioner for over 4 years now and we even took it on a 6-months stay abroad. What we like about it is that it creates this sound wall between you and your bed partner, ideal to fall asleep. The sound is created on the spot with a "fan in a box", which means that you don't get any pre-recorded badly looping sounds. Ideal for people who don't "do" whale songs. After years of using the sound conditioner I now have a Pavlovian reaction to the sound and fall asleep within minutes. There's only a few products that have changed and improved my life and this insomnia-beating device did. (Thanks)

It's not the most fancy sleep machine in that it's only a white noise generator, but the noise is high quality and the sound coverage is very good - it's hard to pinpoint where the machine is located exactly. I take it with me when I travel to ensure I get a good night's sleep; the design is solid and has held up well.

I bought this product in January 2013 and within a month, it had broken down, even though, I had bought the correct voltage converter as recommended. The manufacturers, Marpac, never responded to my emails and Amazon did not stand behind the product as I had not met their 14 day rule. I am very disappointed in Amazon's customer service and would now only buy items like dvds from Amazon as I do not have any faith in them standing behind faulty products.

This machine makes me be free from noise: my nextdoor and infront-door neighbours.
But I don't think it is helpful to cover the sounds of footsteps of upstair neighbours.
Anyway, I am satisfied with its performance.

This is a USA product with a USA type plug, that is ok because adaptors are easily available. However, it is not suitable for UK use without a Stepdown Voltage Convertor without one of these devices you will burn out the machine. This is not made sufficiently clear in the product description. In terms of effectiveness its not too bad but on the higher setting the motor whine can be heard along with the white noise.

This sounded like a very good idea but I just found it too noisy - imagine a very loud air con unit

My wife developed a bout of insomnia some 5 years ago, and found that at the time the "Birdsong" channel on Digital Radio became a bizzare and unexpected solution to her problem. However when it went off air some 2-3 years ago we went down a huge and complex route of trying to create digital loops off downloads of birdsong, rainforests, white noise et al (and failing due to the inevitable "jump" betweeen loops and the complications for setting up about 8 hours of loops). Eventually we settled on her running a succession of huge 12" fans next to the bed and that's how it's been for some 3 years. Somewhere along the line we came across this device but ignored it due to the price. Finally, as a birthday gift, I got her this and the moment we turned it on we new we had cracked it and the fans could go. Cheap as 12" fans can be, shoving one in an Ikea bag everytime she/we to stay away has been a pain. Features are; 1) The device is 9 x 13cm and so is very unintrusive 2) appears to be basically a compact fan in a box and therefore gives a uniform (very important) white noise output. 3) Has two adjustments; top dial that seems to modify pitch, side collar that adjust volume. 4)The operating switch is three way; Off, I and II. Whatever the differnce between I and II is must be subtle as I can't tell the difference.

RE: VOLTAGE; PLEASE NOTE; VERY IMPORTANT; I "took a punt" on this, not reading many of the reviews. Having now taken delvery and read some, I was concerned that many stated that there were potentially dangerous issues with the device being a USA device at 117 Volts and associated issues.
