Book Description

1 Nov 2007 Making Sense of Places
This guide to Market Drayton has been created by Horticulturalist Pamela Smith and produced by MADE*, the architecture centre for the West Midlands region. Pamela was invited to create a map working with local people. The aim was to rediscover the town, not from a typical historical or tourist perspective, but from an alternative, but distinctly local viewpoint. As part of MADE* s programme to examine ideas around Sense of Place and Local Distinctiveness, we asked a horticulturalist to develop a walk that uncovered the specific and distinctive flora of Market Drayton. The process involved an open invitation to local people to join Pamela and an architect on a walk and from this produce a visitor map. The walk took place on a rainy Monday evening on 18th June 2007. Pamela Smith, and Architect Joe Holyoak were guides on a walk with no map, just a simple rule that the walkers should lead the guiders. This inverse relationship and subsequent ramble around Market Drayton informed the route for a journey around the town which resulted in this book; a horticulturalist s interpretation of a place.
