Product Description

Product Description
Anne Miranda's inventive twist on a classic rhyme tells what happens after a shopper goes to market, to market, to buy a fat pig. Back home the pig promptly escapes, and soon the pig is in the kitchen, the lamb is on the bed, the cow is on the couch--and the rest of the animals are wreaking havoc throughout the house.

From the Author
To market, to market to buy a fat pig... What happens next?
Read this book to find out what happens when that pig comes home-jiggity jig. It's a hilarious extension of the familiar old nursery rhyme. It's beautifully illustrated by the Caldecott- Award-winning illustrator, Janet Stevens. Try reading it while bouncing your child on your knee ,as your parents probably did with you while reciting "to market" when you were little! I hope you and your children enjoy sharing this book together. Anne Miranda --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

What a delight. Perfect for ages 2 through 1st grade. A familiar poem with an interesting twist. Adults will thoroughly enjoy it, but let the kids read the story too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great vegetarian fun!, 3 Jul 1999

This review is from: To Market, to Market (Hardcover)
My two-year-old son loved this book! The realistic illustrations, combined with the black-and-white photography, worked well to convey the sense of chaos that grows throughout the book. The story's rhythm was good -- my son was finishing sentences for me within a few readings. The ending was amusing -- I don't think it was intended to be politically correct, but it turned out that way anyway, without preachiness. Good show!

5.0 out of 5 stars Uncontrollable groceries depicted by rhyme and collage., 29 Nov 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: To Market, to Market (Hardcover)
To market, to market, one woman goes, buying live animals, but losing her home. Its chaos with the animals invading her home until she feeds them soup, then all is under control. Miranda's picturebook's exceptional patterned language works with Steven's surreal illustrations, each effectively describing the struggle between the woman and her unusual groceries. Rhythmic patterns and end rhyme like "hen and pen" build the story's predictability. Repetition of "To market, to market" and "Home again," gives readers a comfortable, familiar, expected pattern, while setting the pace of the story. Multiple media depict the animals' invasion: including colored pencils, acrylic paints, oil pastels, photography, and collage. Together, these create rich, three dimensional compositions dominated by large, bright, and expressive illustrations of the woman and animals atop and in contrast to large, realistic black and white photographs of supermarkets and domestic rooms. Despite the contrasting elements, unity among the different media types and styles facilitates the illustrations' success. Both soft and rough textures wrap seamlessly around the edges of each double-page layout, promoting Miranda's text through Steven's imagination. Together the picturebook's words and illustrations blend into one powerful message that captivates and wins over readers of all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! Everyone should read this book!
The children will be looking for the cow in the closet and will be laughing aloud. This is a fantastic book to read aloud to children.

5.0 out of 5 stars We laughed till we cried!
This rates a 10 from the teachers I work with. The rhythm, rhyme and repetition make it a natural for the pre-school through grade two set. Great illustrations too!
