2.0 out of 5 stars A Severe Letdown 9 April 2008
By Damien Slattery - Published on
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I cannot believe Mark Steyn had anything to do with this dreadful excuse of a book!
I have been a fan of his Broadway criticism since his great book "Broadway Babies Say Goodnight : Musicals Then and Now", his analysis is always perceptive and he is an irascible devil.
This new publication is a small book (120 pages) littered with unnecessary pictures and bizarrely large type, so it has scant actual text. I mean really scant!! I was shocked when I first opened it and thought i had just bought a children's book!
It is way over-priced and i am scandalised that Mr. Steyn would let this thing be published!
What happened Mark?? Where did it all go wrong??

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun book but a little pricey 27 April 2008

Mark Steyn is a gifted writer with a keen eye and good ear. His book "Broadway Babies Say Goodnight" was one of the most insightful books I have read on American Musical Theater.
This book is a more in depth look at one writer. I don't want to give the "plot" away but he writes about Dorothy Fields and her music and then takes what he considers her top 20 and discusses them. There is also a chapter on a Cole Porter song. This book is a fun read and imparts information in a quick and easy manor. I think the cost was a little high for the amount of material contained, but I am still glad I bought it.
