Product Description

Review

..".the artist's provocative sketches, sculptures and paintings toy with our preconceptions of societal and historical norms by mixing incongruous styles, objects and figures while bringing those uncomfortable paradoxes to the forefront of our consciousness. Suited for those both familiar with Ryden's work and those who are just getting acquainted, this book directs us to the crux of what makes Ryden's work so delectable, its ability to bring together disparate things and create something that showcases both the beauty and the darkness of those encounters." " coolhunting.com"..an excellent opportunity to investigate what all the Mark Ryden hype is about for both dedicated fans and newcomers to the weird world of Ryden." Ty"po-Graphical.com""

About the Author

Blending pop cultural themes with art techniques reminiscent of the Old Masters, Mark Ryden has created a singular style that blurs the traditional boundaries between high and low art. His paintings have been exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide, and his work is part of the permanent collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Amanda Erlanson is a writer, art collector, and editor of the art blog "Erratic Phenomena."

The book is simply superb...full to the brim with fantastic paintings, well laid out and with detail shots which as the next best thing to seeing the paintings in the flesh and "flesh" does feature quite heavily too...a must have book which will exceed your expectations...highly recommended.

Okay but not the most exciting book I have read on an artist. To be honest for the price of it I would have hoped with a few more images of his work.

Mark Ryden is a beautiful genius!! 20 April 2013
By Frenchie - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
I've waited a long time to see this collection called The Gay 90's, and I can only say that I was smiling the entire time as I looked through this last night, I mean I was GIDDY!!! I'd never heard of Mark Ryden until about 5 years ago...some new friends came to my apartment and saw how I decorated and knew I would love his work. They were so right. Kitsch has never been so beautiful and hilarious as when this man shares on canvas what his mind sees. I feel incredibly lucky to own a copy of this book, I hope there are enough copies to satisfy all his fans. Thanks Amazon!!!

My favorite visual artist 18 April 2013
By SarahK66 - Published on Amazon.com

I love Mark Ryden's art! Visual artists are in a league of their own. My mother in law is a painter and it is amazing how detailed everything has to be to make the piece and how delicate every brush stroke is. This particular book is my favorite of Ryden's. It's bigger and the subject matter is a lot more interesting.. If you like him check out Camille Rose Garcia and Elizabeth McGrath. Both of them have books on Amazon which are really great too.

Surrealism at it's finest 13 Mar. 2014

This is a well put together piece of work. The binding and the pages are of great material, and the colors just seem to pop the way I believe Mark Ryden wanted them to. This is a great purchase that I was debating over for some time, and I am glad that I did eventually decided that I need to have this adorning my shelves.

Beautiful book 20 May 2013

It's just beautiful, well printed, large format. And of course the paintings themselves are great! If you enjoy Mark Ryden's work you'll definitely like this book.
Beautiful Book! 18 Jun. 2014
By -- - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
This is a beautiful book. It is GIGANTIC and chalk full of Ryden's work, past and present. It arrived with about 30 pages torn in the middle of the book, approximately 1/4" deep and 1" long, like the pages were squashed with large pliers. I didn't want to deal with returning the book, but yours might be shipped torn too? For the price and for the Work inside, this is a MUST have for Mark Ryden fans new and old. If it wasn't torn, I'd give it 5 STARS.
