5.0 out of 5 stars Honey-toned Handel 22 Jun 2007
By L. Hunt
Format:Audio CD
This is smooth, understated and confident singing of Handel arias. Padmore manages to bring freshness to Where E're You Walk from Semele, but I love Waft Her Angles Through the Sky from Jephtha - the long slow lines exposing the honey in his voice. Arguably the best track is described as a bonus - As Steals the Morn (L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato) - which is odd since it is the name of the album. Padmore is joined by Lucy Crowe and they both have such clarity that they reveal the interplay between the vocal parts in this duet. They bring a soaring, full sound that is uplifting and immensely satisfying. It is worth buying the CD just for this one duet.

I think this CD also reinforces just how good Handel's writing for the voice is really is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing! 31 Jan 2011
Format:Audio CD
This is an amazing disk, which I have listened to countless times. The arias are sung with clarity, superb diction and real feeling, and Mark Padmore captures the understated emotion of Handel's writing to perfection. The duet with Lucy Crowe is just sublime. The tracks from Samson show what a great oratorio this is (why so few full recordings?). Having been involved in two performances, it is astonishing that the aria "Your Charms to Ruin Led the Way" is so often cut. Mark, if you are reading this, a recording of the whole oratorio please?

Format:Audio CD
Mark Padmore and Andrew Manze join forces to make this outstanding CD of some of Handel's more interesting arias for the tenor voice. Sublime!

4.0 out of 5 stars Need more involvement 6 Aug 2011
Format:Audio CD
Padmore has a very nice voice, but unfortunately he is not showing that emotional involvement that we have become used to in Händel singing. Quite a common problem for UK tenors...

4.0 out of 5 stars "Gramophone" recommendation 27 July 2011
By Sasha
Format:Audio CD
Another "Gramophone" recommendation - they selected the title song (actually a duet with soprano Lucy Crowe) for their best-of-the-month choice and it really, really blew me away,it was such a explosion of vocal beauty and harmony that I snatched CD the first moment when I saw it on a shelves without thinking twice.

Of course,it turned out to be a bit of cheat because it is really the only duet on the whole album and nothing else matches this brilliance - ha! - but never mind, I said to myself that maybe with time I will grew up to like the rest. The rest is selection of dramatic arias and scenes from various Händel's oratorios and operas, showing of Padmore's unusual voice in the best light. I remember critics saying something about him not being strong at deeper tones and giving him sort-of backhand compliments but music is so pretty and musicians so good (The English Concert under baton of Andrew Manze) that I can easily recommend this is the best possible introduction to this singer.
