Product Description

Product Description

‘Gemel’ is an old English word meaning ‘twin’ – Mark Forsyth’s Gemel Edition brings together a Sunday Times Number One bestseller and its highly anticipated sequel in an easy-to-read single ebook. The Etymologicon springs from Mark Forsyth’s Inky Fool blog about the strange connections between words. The Horologicon – which means ‘a book of things appropriate to each hour’ - follows a day in the life of unusual, beautiful and forgotten English words.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love words, love the books 14 Nov 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I only discovered these books when the Horologicon made it's debut. Reading the write up on it was enough to show that I had to have them. I am not disappointed in the slightest. They are well written, easy to follow (even my English challenged wife can cope with them), humourous & just a damned good read.

Mark - when's the next one coming?

5.0 out of 5 stars Nerdy facts for everyone 9 Aug 2013
By PKS
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This book is really witty and a really digestible way to get some real insights into the provenance of words and idioms in the English language.

Now..... my children ask me to read a chapter or two of this aloud every evening meal. I know, it sounds sad but the book is really quite entertaining. I should caution that some of the chapters may be too racy for very young children.
