An outstanding insight into the gospel of MARK, clear, easy to read, if you are a young(15 to 21) or old/mature Christian, and you havent read a J C Ryle expository on any the 4 gospels, I encourage you to do so. This one on MARK is my favourite though, practical, short chapters(2 1/2 pages) the amazing thing about J C Ryle, is that he wrote these books over a hundred years ago, you would not be able to tell, they are so relevant for today, truly blessed from on high, 200% + etc.

Let's get one thing clear, this is not a commentary as such as it doesn't engage with the text in the way commentaries do. But what JC Ryle does very successfully is apply the text and this is where his Expository Thoughts series on the Gospels scores really highly. I'm preaching through Mark at the moment and after reading other commentaries so I can exegete the text thoroughly (in other words tell my congregation what it's all about) I always turn to this as it is rich in practical application and examples. Any time spent in the company of JC Ryle I always consider well spent and when reading him often feel it's such a shame we don't have bishops who can teach the Bible like him today!

Excellent book for daily readings. Despite being an old author, Ryle remains clear, concise and practical for a modern audience. Worth buying all 4 of Ryle's gospels.
