Product Description

From the Back Cover

Most Bible commentaries take us on a one-way trip from the twentieth century to the first century. But they leave us there, assuming that we can somehow make the return journey on our own. In other words, they focus on the original meaning of the passage but don't discuss its contemporary application. The information they offer is valuable -- but the job is only half done! The NIV Application Commentary Series helps us with both halves of the interpretive task. This new and unique series shows readers how to bring an ancient message into a modern context. It explains not only what the Bible means but also how it can speak powerfully today.

The Application series is quite systematic and David Garland does an excellent job in staying within the series' parameters. Easily readable and very usable for preparation of preaching and teaching from Mark. I have used this book for two years now and revisited it again and again when I want to further mediate on various parts in Mark's Gospel. Again helpful background information also for personal growth. This book has greatly contributed to my own walk with God as well as helped me to prepare teachings for conferences, seminars and workshops that I conduct. I have found the thougths and concepts presented useful in different contexts in Africa, Asia the US and Europe.
Using materials presented by David Garland in ministry has been encouraging as I witnessed and had feedback from seminar participants that they understood more about Jesus than ever before. Thank you David Garland for providing this well prepared resource.

A thorough commentary - Well worth sticking at. 20 Nov. 2003
By Wesley - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
I am very glad I read this book. While I found it hard to get into, once I was past the first few sections I couldn't put it down. His strongest section is where he explores the trial and crucifixion of Jesus. David Garland challenges any romanticised pre-conceptions that the reader may have about the crucifixion and explores without apology the uncomfortable things about this gospel: the total failure of the disciples, that Jesus' last recorded words are "My God my God why have you forsaken me?" and the lack of appearance of the risen Christ (he stops at 16:8). I gained insight on a new angle on the death of Christ. I recommend this book to anyone interested in Mark or Jesus mission.

The best commentary on Mark I've ever read 28 Jun. 2011

I have taught all the gospels multiple times. The NIV Application Commentary series is wordy, but right up there with the best of all the series. And this commentary on Mark is the best of all commentaries I have read on Mark.

Solid commentary, good insights 6 Feb. 2013
By JMoon - Published on Amazon.com

Use this every week as a preach through Mark. I use inductive Bible study and other commentaries to help me flesh out the meaning of the text but this commentary format with 'Bridging Contexts' and 'Contemporary Significance' helps me think through how to preach the passage. There are occasional illustrations I find useful as well. Garland's preaching segments are a good start for deciding how many verses to tackle. Often they are too large, but it's a place to start.
This is the 2nd NIV Application Commentary I have used. Liked them both. (Recommend Exodus by Peter Enns)

Great clear and useful insight into the Bible scriptures. 29 Nov. 2013

I always buy these commentaries when I can get them at a good price. They are clearly written and are very helpful to understand scripture that at first glance may seem mysterious or just unclear. They have helped to clarify and sometimes correct my understanding of God and scripture. I highly recommend the NIV Application commentaries.
application is always the very need in this society 23 Sept. 2013

There are many valuable up to date commentary books, while this NIV series are especially written to our contemporary life. Normally the hardest job is from scripture exegeses to the application of the biblical doctrine in this modern life. The bridging from the original meaning to the context application in this series can bring us bright eyes and light of heart. For a long time in history texpositions to the scriptures are strong, yet the application is rather weak, while this book of Mark (also other books in this Series) meets this need. Therefore, the book helps the readers to establish their Biblical knowlege to daily Christian life. From another aspect, there are not many exegeses books to the Mark (comparing with other Books in the Bible). Therefore, Zondervan has devoted another precious messages to self-study scriptures as well as ministering modern Christians in the church. I usually would like to use this series (good at application) together with《Zondervan NIV Bible Commentary》(good at structures), (consulting editors, Kenneth L. Barker and John R. Kohlenberger III). I personally regard 《The NIV Application Commentary: Mark》as modern series of Henry Matthew series.
