Turnage works with rhythms and tones that come together as gently provocative, yet never alienating. Scherzoid is the prize here and I like it as much as Rockabye (another disc), but Finley in When I Woke gets a lot of play on my machine, too. In fact, the disc works quite well for the most part. The real problem is the final piece which is bloated and meandering. If a trusted friend has suggested he lose about 4-5 minutes and just tighten it up, it would have been very good (yeah, the part where it sounds like he's getting paid by the note vs the overall effect). There's still, time, of course. But when you become famous, who is going to suggest such a thing to your face?
