Product Description

54bc. As tensions build in Gaul and the druids manoeuvre the tribes towards general rebellion, Priscus and the diminishing senior staff of Caesar's army prepare to return to Britannia, this time with a vast army and a will to crush the tribes of that mysterious island.

Meanwhile in Rome and with his ties to the general severed, Fronto contemplates a non-military future as he settles into the life of a married nobleman, socialising with Rome's elite and coming to terms with the decline in his fitness in recent months. In this year of rising troubles, Priscus will miss his former commander's presence more than ever, while Fronto will learn more than he wishes to of the great Pompey.

With rebellious Gauls, defiant Britons, vengeful giants, veteran gladiators and dangerous criminals, Fronto is pushed to the limits, driving him to a decision he dreads and a battle for his very life at the steaming, hellish land of Hades' Gate.

More About the Author

I live with my wife, my son and two (close approximations of) dogs in rural North Yorkshire, where my wife and I both grew up, surrounded by friends and family. A born and bred Yorkshireman with a love of the country, I cannot envisage spending my life anywhere else, though my anchor is sometimes tested as the wanderlust hits and we travel wherever I can find the breathtaking remains of the classical world. I have a love of travel and history, architecture and writing and those four interact well enough to keep me almost permanently busy.

Since leaving school and University, I have tried a great number of careers, including car sales, insurance, software engineering, computer network management, civil service and even painting and decorating sales. I have lived in four counties and travelled as widely as time and budget allowed and find myself, on the cusp of my fortieth year, back where I began and finally doing something I love.

Having written a number of unpublished short stories in my early days, I decided back in 2003 to try and write a full length novel. That was the start of Marius' Mules. Being a lover of Roman history, I decided to combine my love of writing and my love of classical history. Marius' Mules was followed two years later by Interregnum, my attempt to create a new fantasy story still with a heavy flavour of Rome. Since then, the success and popularity of both has spawned sequels to each work, with three tales in each series so far and more planned.

As well as my own website at I maintain a website detailing the Roman sites I visit and photograph at, and blog at I am an almost terminally chatty person. That's just a due warning if you feel like contacting me (via my website.) I am always happy to speak to people and have just put together an FAQ gathered together from things I have been asked previously.

A last note on reviews: Although I am currently a self-published author and there are a number of similar folk out there, some of whom I count as friends, the reviews I make on Amazon are in no way weighted toward them and I review work as I see it, although I do not review books that I did not like, except when they are part of a series with other, better reviews - so do not expect to see many 1-3star reviews. In the same way, I hope the reviews I recieve will be based on an individual's personal experience with my work and not biased for or against by outside influences. Please be fair with reviewing - I do not endorse nepotism.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Series, Great Book 30 Sep 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I am a big fan of historical fiction but only found out about the Marius Mules series recently.
Finished the first book in two days then bought and rattled through the whole series in quick time.
Basically it follows one of Julius Caesar's Legion commanders (or Legate), Marcus Fronto, during the invasion of Gaul, each book taking one year of the campaign.
Marcus is a hard drinking soldiers' solider with little time for Politics which causes many clashes with not only Caesar but also some of the other commanders. He nevertheless is a masterful commander and doesn't mind getting his hands dirty to get the job done.
Well written and full of action, but also historically very informative.
Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hades Gate a BLOCKBUSTER. 11 Dec 2013
By Trajan
In HADES GATE the fifth in the Marius Mules series Simon Turney has penned a real blockbuster, with a great narrative bursting with historical facts, combined with plenty of violent gritty action. Fast paced and compelling, I found I could not put it down. I believe that Simon has now earned a place alongside all the great contemporary Roman fiction authors. Well done and keep it coming.
For those who would like further information on this epoch I highly recommend the OSPREY Campaign, Warrior, and men at arms booklets, with great overviews, excellent illustrations, and highly detailed maps.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's Just OK 10 Sep 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This has been a great series of well paced and exciting tales. All books have been excellent. Unfortunately for me this one is 'just OK'. It is still well written, The characters are all there and there are the usual exciting battle scenes. However, the speed the story unfolds at is, for me, just too slow. It doesn't really take off until the arrival of a super cool gladiator, with a major part to play, but this is well into the book. From his arrival Fronto and friends are back on form and the main action kicks off. Then it becomes the book you wanted - the book it should have been from page one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Improving with every book 5 Sep 2013
By KimJ
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I took a bit of a punt on the first Marius Mules novel and enjoyed it enough to keep going. The focus on the daily functioning of a legion on campaign and the inter-action of soldiers was an interesting viewpoint for me, as was Mr Turney's portrayal of Caesar. The battle scenes were also extremely well described - as good as anything I have read. There were some factual errors here and there but nothing too annoying, however my main criticism was that I found the dialogue a bit stilted and forced at times. I believe Mr Turney self-publishes, or at least did for the earlier books, which unfortunately meant a lot of typos in the kindle version.

However, the books have improved with each new installment and the dialogue has become much more "natural" with a good dose of humour thrown in. The fifth book in the series had me gripped from start to finish and there were very few typos for a kindle book. It seems to me that the author has grown and developed along with his main characters and has now hit his stride, with the result being a well paced, well written book with interesting characters and plot. I hope this carries on in the 6th book - due out next year I believe.
