Review

'This is a splendid book, well illustrated, with plenty of technical explanation as to the hardware employed by this fascinating industry. It deserves to be at the elbow of all those who pretend to any knowledge of the amazing maritime world we cheerfully inhabit.' - Michael Grey, Lloyd's List

Maritime Economics is an exceptionally well-written overview of the international shipping industry. - CHOICE

Product Description

For 5000 years shipping has served the world economy and today it provides a sophisticated transport service to every part of the globe. Yet despite its economic complexity, shipping retains much of the competitive cut and thrust of the “perfect” market of classical economics. This blend of sophisticated logistics and larger than life entrepreneurs makes it a unique case study of classical economics in a modern setting.

The enlarged and substantially rewritten Maritime Economics uses historical and theoretical analysis as the framework for a practical explanation of how shipping works today. Whilst retaining the structure of the second edition, its scope is widened to include:

  • lessons from 5000 years of commercial shipping history
  • shipping cycles back to 1741, with a year by year commentary
  • updated chapters on markets; shipping costs; accounts; ship finance and a new chapter on the return on capital
  • new chapters on the geography of sea trade; trade theory and specialised cargoes
  • updated chapters on the merchant fleet shipbuilding, recycling and the regulatory regime
  • a much revised chapter on the challenges and pitfalls of forecasting.

With over 800 pages, 200 illustrations, maps, technical drawings and tables Maritime Economics is the shipping industry’s most comprehensive text and reference source, whilst remaining as one reviewer put it “a very readable book”.

Martin Stopford has enjoyed a distinguished career in the shipping industry as Director of Business Development with British Shipbuilders, Global Shipping Economist with the Chase Manhattan Bank N.A., Chief Executive of Lloyds Maritime Information Services; Managing Director of Clarkson Research Services and an executive Director of Clarksons PLC. He lectures regularly at Cambridge Academy of Transport and is a Visiting Professor at Cass Business School, Dalian Maritime University and Copenhagen Business School.

Martin Stopford has made an even more comprehensive version on maritime economics. The third version surely is a better edition than the second with up to date statistics (outside of the present downturn of course). I would say that this book is not only a must for maritime economists, but also very good for anyone who wants to know more about the maritime world as the maritime economy has been placed in the broad approach of the whole maritime industry.

Excellent book! 28 April 2012

I bought this book as part of efforts to get a general insight into the shipping industry and have found it to be the best of several I have read. In particular I would suggest people prioritise it over Branch's 'Elements of Shipping', which although packed with masses of detail is dreadfully edited and annoyingly repetitious. 'Martime Economics', by contrast, is written in a flowing and reasonably comprehensible style, is much better laid out and covers many of the same areas while providing much more business detail.
I have been reading it with a cherry-picking style, which the book is well suited to, as it is superbly organised with chapter summaries and section headings which make it easy to find what you want to read. Given the hefty size of the book this is no less than one would expect! The book unfolds into greater detail in the latter sections, so readers in a hurry can concentrate on early chapters to get much of the entire content. The large number of graphs and maps is pleasing and all come with painstaking explanations which I have found invaluable as I have not really studied economics.
All in all this is an excellent book which I highly recommend!

Very good 19 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback
Is disruptive approach. Very pratical. Often in these books is more of the same, and just take one book to know the rest. This is different. for me the best book of maritime economy.
