Review

Make yourself a wardrobe of knitted garments with this large (about A3 to cite a UK size) format book. There are patterns for jackets, cardigans, hats and jumpers - twelve in all - plus a short introduction about this designer. Each pattern has a fashion illustration plus at least one large photograph of the item being worn from more than one angle, so there can be no doubt what it looks like when made up. The patterns are also shown on a two-page illustrated index, together with a starred rating as to difficulty ranging from one to five stars. The instructions are the written type with no charts, and although you can find hints on making up and a list of abbreviations this is not a book that teaches you how to knit. This is suitable for intermediate through to advanced knitters (although there are a couple of easier patterns) and all the patterns are for adult women. If you want to knit some wardrobe-extending garments in both classic and fashion styles this is a good book to get, although its huge size can make it difficult to balance on a lap.-Myshelf.com

What a disappointment after waiting so long for another Marion Foale book.
Too tall to fit into a bookcase, too wide to sit on a shelf and just too big to be able to use it whilst knitting. You need to keep it open on a dining table or take notes on a scrap of paper so you don't have to keep referring to the book, its far too large and cumbersome and most of it is just 'white space'.

Marion's knitwear has always been about 'classic' this book and the patterns are old fashioned. The models and photographs are similar to books I have from the 80's.
Other 'classic' knitwear producers such as Pringle/Burberry etc) have given their knitwear a younger image its still classic but current, fresh, young, sexy with designs that todays women want to wear.

Woman's Weekly have been featuring Marion's designs for a while now and they are a lot nicer.
I hope if there is a book 2, the patterns are more up to date and the book itself no larger than A4 in size.

My final moan is that 3ply is virtually impossible to find, unless you buy it directly from Marion Foale of course and it is expensive. Why sell a book if people can't afford to buy the yarn to knit the patterns thats just silly. Unless it is hoped sales of MF 3ply will sell more. It won't.

Great patterns - as Marian Foales patterns always are - especially if you like neat tailored jackets. As with all pattern books these days there are the usual hats and scarves which always seem to me to be "fillers" but if you enjoy knitting with 3-ply wool this is the book for you. There are very few knitting patterns about these days which use 3-ply and this book has some lovely designs which will have the avid knitter drooling! Only two problems. First, the size of the book - other reviewers have mentioned this. The book is far bigger than eg a Rowan knitting magazine and its a real hassle to read the patterns whilst knitting. Other problem is that the wool specified is Marian Foale's own which is not easy to get hold of. It took a bit of research to find an outlet. Fortunately the patterns are really good so its worth it in the end.

Lovely book, beautifully photographed. However, I was disappointed that the range of sizes of the designs was limited. I didn't feel that it was as good as the book she published in the 1980s which I have, and which has a wider range of sizing in it. I would have thought that by now, with the knitting revival well and truly established that designers would realise that knitters come in all shapes and sizes. As this is being touted as Book 1, I hope that by the time Marion publishes the second book, the sizes will have more options.
