Turn your racing experience upside down!

For the first time in HD, Nintendo's Mario Kart franchise comes to the Wii U console, introducing new racing circuit designs and anti-gravity karts that will have players driving upside down. Players will also enjoy a variety of series-favourite features, including the return of 12-player online competitive play, hang-gliders, underwater racing, and motorbikes.

The anti-gravity feature allows for never-imagined racing circuit designs. Players will speed through courses and find themselves suddenly racing on walls in a haunted mansion or upside-down over Princess Peach's Castle as their wheels automatically rotate and shift into anti-gravity gear.

Mario Kart TV lets players share highlight videos they submitted to Miiverse. Crisp HD graphics and a 60-frames-per-second frame rate offer players the most visually stunning entry in the series yet.

Experience a wealth of features that span the series, including 12-player online competitive play. Elements first introduced in Mario Kart 7, such as hang gliders and underwater racing, along with elements introduced in Mario Kart Wii, such as motorbikes and performing tricks in midair, also make their return.

Fan-favourites Waluigi and Toadette re-join the cast of familiar characters from the Mushroom Kingdom, including returning characters such as Metal Mario, Lakitu, and Shy Guy.

This time around, take to the starting grid with Bowser's minions, with all available as playable characters for the first time ever. Will Iggy, Larry, Ludwig, Morton, Roy, and Wendy pip Mario and co to the podium?

New features

Spin Turbo: While racing upside down or on walls, players can bump into other racers or certain course obstacles to get a speed boost. Spin Turbo fundamentally redefines the way that players compete, and makes anti-gravity racing even more exhilarating.

New items: Two new items join the fray in Mario Kart 8. First, the Piranha Plant attaches to the front of the player's kart and chomps at other characters, banana peels on the course, and even shells thrown by other characters. Each time the Piranha Plant lunges forward to bite, the player receives a brief boost of speed. The second new item is the Boomerang Flower. After acquiring it, racers can throw a boomerang at opponents to stun them, and its arc allows players to strike multiple opponents with a single toss. The boomerang can be thrown three times, forward or backwards.

New courses: Remixed classic courses make a return in Mario Kart 8, with favourites such as Moo Moo Meadows from Mario Kart Wii, Toad's Turnpike from Mario Kart 64, and Donut Plains from Super Mario Kart, among others. The graphics and layout of these courses have been redesigned and reimagined – for example, Toad's Turnpike now allows players to drive up certain walls in anti-gravity mode. The game will include 16 new courses and 16 remixed classic courses.

Live recorded music: For the first time in the Mario Kart series, select courses in Mario Kart 8 feature music recorded by live performers.

Control scheme: Mario Kart 8 supports a variety of control schemes including the Wii U GamePad, the Wii U Pro Controller, the Wii Wheel, and Wii Remote and Nunchuk. The game can also be played in off-TV mode using just the Wii U GamePad.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deserves the 5 stars!! 31 May 2014
Edition:Limited Edition with Blue Shell Figurine
I don't normally do reviews but this game is so good, it really does deserve the time to type one up. The game itself plays as you would expect from a Mario kart game, there are minor differences to Mario Kart Wii in the controls but for the most part, they're quick and simple to pick up, the main differences from the last one being the drift and anti gravity features, which work extremely well in this instalment.

The graphics are absolutely gorgeous, Nintendo has always done so well with introducing so many beautiful colours into their games, and this one is no exception. The water, the grass, the ice, the sand, the clouds, the list goes on and on at just how many amazing terrains and environments you race through.

There's a large variety of tracks to race on and the voting system has once again returned from Mario kart Wii in the online mode, which plays super smooth and is a joy to play with others, there is even a limited chat function amongst your group while the voting is happening. If you do not have your Wii U online, then you are still getting a great lengthy single player game without it, but if you do have internet access on your Wii U, then this mode just pushes the games fun to the max.

Now onto the limited edition features of this product. I bought mine directly from Nintendo and it came with a free T-shirt, keyring and the game with Ltd edition blue tortoise shell for the same price as Amazon is charging. Some people have criticized the tortoise shells quality, and while it is just a light, plastic model on a plastic base, it does look pretty good on the shelf and its collector value will no doubt go up as the years go on. It is the size of half a Wii u game case, and stands out with its vibrant blue and white colours.

Turn your racing experience upside down! Nintendo’s Mario Kart franchise comes to the Wii U console in full HD, introducing new racing circuit designs and anti-gravity karts that will have players driving upside down. And for the first time, all of Bowser’s seven Koopalings are playable characters-- get a taste of being bad on the race track by playing as Iggy, Larry, Lemmy, Ludwig, Morton, Roy and Wendy. Players will also enjoy a variety of series-favorite features, including the return of 12-player online competitive play, hang-gliders, underwater racing and motorbikes.

Mario Kart 8 is the best kart racing game Nintendo has made in a long time. It strikes a careful balance between refining old ideas while introducing fresh new ones. Admittedly, its gorgeous graphics and jazzy orchestrated soundtrack bolster its presentation, but you’re getting a lot more than just looks with this one – although I spent an awful lot of time gawking at the details in slow-motion, the fast and furious pace of racing with friends both locally and online is what really kept me coming back.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blue Shell of Death 4 Jun. 2014
Edition:Limited Edition with Blue Shell Figurine|Verified Purchase
I'm super happy with this. Some people may find the Blue Shell figurine to be too small, I found it to be bigger than what I expected. It is a figurine after all, not a replica of the shell. MK8 is the best MK yet. Thank you Amazon for getting this to me me sooner than the expected date.
