Mario Giacomelli (19252000) photographed farmlands around Senigallia, creating surreal hillsides with radical perspectives and exposure techniques. Concentrating on the marks of the land, he made aerial photographs to intensify the verticality of the space, and also etched trees, mounds or holes into his negatives. His work was compared with that of Frederick Sommer, Henry Holmes Smith, Christo and Robert Smithson, and the distinguished photography curator John Szarkowski commended his work and propelled his career to even greater heights. This book is a sublime journey into Giacomellis pictures and art. Respected art historians and critics, including Christian Caujolle, Goffredo Fofi, Alistair Crawford, Ferdinando Scianna and Alessandra Mauro, juxtapose their essays with 200 superb reproductions of Giacomellis work, underlining the relevance and distinctiveness of the photographers art.
About the Author
Alistair Crawford is currently Research Professor at the School of Art, University of Wales. He has contributed widely to books, catalogues and journals in Britain, France, Italy, New Zealand and the US, mainly on the history of photography in Europe, including books on Mario Giacomelli. He has also curated several major touring photographic exhibitions including recently, Mario Giacomelli, Ninna Nanna for Printworks Gallery, Chicago.
