Product Description

Product Description

A Single SideBand (SSB) radio has a long range so is perfect for sending and receiving messages at sea.

SSB is essential for crossing the Atlantic due to its much larger range than VHF

This book explains how SSB works, how to choose and install your set, how to operate it and get your operator’s qualification. It has been completely rewritten and laid out in a new format.

From the Back Cover

Responsible yacht and powerboat owners always fit a VHF radiotelephone. But what if you plan to sail beyond its 30–mile range?

The next step is a Single Sideband (SSB) set, which uses the short wave (HF) band. With a range of several thousands miles, it is ideal for communication by voice or text with the shore and with other vessels.

This book explains how SSB works, how to choose and install your set and how to get the best out of it. The range of satelite services, especially the affordable telex/fax/e–mail service, is also covered in some details.

A whole chapter is devoted to the new Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) which came into full operation in 1999. Section of VHF, Satcom, Amateur Radio, citizen band, weather services, Maritime Safety Information and time signals are also included.

Marine SSB Operations is based on Michael Gale′s 25 years experience at his Radio School where he trained thousands of marine radiotelephone operation. It is an excellent preparation for a radio course, for the exam needed to gain the International Operator′s Qualification for Small Craft, and a useful reference book to keep on board.

Recommended for all the ′restricted′ operator certificates throughout the world.

Virtually no information on Marine SSB 27 Feb 2008
By E. Martinez - Published on Amazon.com
Amazon Verified Purchase
This is absolutely the worst book I have gotten from Amazon, and will be the first I return as soon as I figure out how. Firstly I purchased this book, since I have the same ICOM Marine SSB that is on the cover and I needed to learn how to use it. I just went through the entire book cover to cover and there wasnt one single reference on how to actually use a Marine SSB radio. The first chapter was on Why one needs SSB, the next on what is SSB, then more chapters on radio spectrum, and history, and Licensing etc. Then it starts with how to use a VHF and more info on VHF frequencies, then it jumps to CB and HAM radios. One example of some of the garbage in this book is "If you are using a hand held microphone, if you are right handed use your left hand to operate the controls. NOT ONE MENTION on how to use a Marine SSB, no mention of ITU channels, or when to use them. Nothing about Mariners Nets, NOTHING! Its amazing since the title of the book is "Marine SSB Operation" I needed to know how the group and channel knobs work, what ITU channels should one use...I'm so annoyed, that I just wasted an hour of my life on this dribble.

good initiation 24 Nov 2007
By Francois Davin - Published on Amazon.com
A good initiation for a new user. Does not contain a lot more than what you have to learn to pass your licence in Australia...
Some interesting points in the range question, day and night.
