Product Description

This marine biology text is built around two important themes - it emphasizes the ecological principles governing marine life throughout the world, and it applies a habitat approach to the study of marine environments. The book covers all the major habitats found in the oceans of the world, making it a highly flexible teaching tool. In each chapter a wide range of topics is covered for a given habitat, from coral reefs to rocky shores. This edition has been updated to include the most recent material on such topics as the effects of global warming, the importance of nanoplankton and hydrothermal vents.

About the Author

Dr. James Nybakken is professor of biological sciences at the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, a consortium operation of seven of the California State Universities. His research interests are in the feeding ecology of certain groups of predatory marine gastropod molluscs. He regularly teaches three undergraduate upper division courses, marine invertebrate zoology, marine ecology, and microscope techniques, and two graduate courses, biology of the mollusca and a seminar. Dr. Nybakken is a fellow of the California Academy of Sciences and has served as an officer in five scientific societies. He has also served as editor or peer reviewer for 11 scientific journals. He has published 32 scientific papers and is the sole author of four books and co-author of three others. His biography appears in seven different biographical books. His hobbies include growing orchids, making wine, and cooking.

As a student studying marine biology I required a book that was reasonable cheap and covered all aspects of the marine enviroment, this book fulfills both of these requirements. It covers such diverse topics as coral reefs, the benthic environment, pollution, and conservation. It is very easy to read and understand, and is well illustrated including some superb colour photographs. However, you do not have to be studying marine biology to make the most out of this book, it is a thoroughly enjoyable read for anyone who has a passing interest in the subject.

I didn't take biology beyond my 3rd year (age 14), but have a general scientific and mathematical background, and now I am "over 40" and trying to look a bit more at marine ecology I find this a very useful introduction with clear explanations (including excellent illustrations) of the latin and greek that the more learned tomes tend to lapse into. It is on very thin paper, so in spite of its huge number of pages it is light enough to carry about, and the print quality is good.

If you enjoy learning about the marine environment you'll enjoy this book. It is very good and informative. It begins with a few fairly indepth chapters on basic oceanography and then covers all the marine habitats from the benthic zone, epipelagic zone, deep sea, coral reefs etc. The last chapter is about overfishing and man's impacts on the world's oceans with detail of what habitats are being overfished and to what extent. Very good indeed.
