Product Description

Synopsis

This expanded and updated edition of a valuable manual for marine aquarium hobbyists provides the latest scientific discoveries and aquarium techniques for keeping and propagating living corals. The coral reef, both in the ocean and in a marine aquarium, is a symbiotic system of corals and beneficial algae in a community with other marine life forms. The author also discusses sponges, echinoderms, mollusks, crustaceans, and fishes, and advises on controlling and eliminating diseases and parasites in a marine aquarium. This book is filled with instructive colour photos.

A very specific book-not for beginners. Exactly! Contrary to a previous reviewer's opinion, I don't see that as a downside to the book. The book sets out to be "indispensable guidance for the Marine aquarium hobbyist", and keeping tropical marine fish is a complex procedure. A welcome addition to the science of the hobby. For glossy photos, although there are some, look else where.

If you are interested in hard and soft corals, or invertebrates, then this book is very specifically and succesfully aimed at you. The text is very informative if a little dry, but the photos are very dissapointing, and make identification of species quite tricky.
The section on fish is short and lacking any in depth guidance on compatibility either with other fish or corals and inverts.
A great book for everyone except those who wish to keep fish and corals and/or invertibrates.
The index also takes some getting used to.
If it's general information you're after or you're a new marine aquarist then Palletas "New Marine Aquarium" would be a better bet.

Good read 11 Jan 2012
Format:Paperback
I bought this as a Christmas present for my uncle who has a marine aquarium. He told me that it's a really good book to have around. He's been keeping marine for several years but he said there was quite lot of info included which he found helpful.
