"A sex symbol becomes a thing", says Marilyn Monroe, her voice being approximated by Trudi Jo Marie Keck, who also doubles as the editor of We Remember Marilyn, an historical appreciation of the life of the much-vaunted sex goddess. "I always thought symbols were things you clashed together", she continues to muse, "but if I'm going to be a symbol of anything, I'd rather it be sex than some other things there are symbols for. I know how they'll remember me: 'Here lies Marilyn Monroe, 34-24-36'. But, anyway, they'll remember me." And remember her they do, in this concoction written and directed by Ted Newsom (Ed Wood--Look Back in Angora). Newsom doesn't bother to cite the source for the above words ascribed to Ms. Monroe so it's hard to say where they came from, but they pointedly set the tone for any discussion of sex-symbol iconography. And how better to sum up a career that moved between celebrity and the highest seats of power on a vehicle of sex, and ended early and abruptly. Film clips, photos (where Marilyn the icon truly shone), and a rich array of stock footage form the backdrop for the proceedings. I did not expect much from this unassuming little DVD - but was most pleasantly surprised. It is a thoroughly researched biography containing an honest warts-and-all picture of the 20th century greatest screen goddess. The film contains a wide range of MM's footage, both on and off screen, as well as many insightful recollections of her contemporaries. There are also revealing fragments from Marylin's letters and diaries which contribute to the moving portait of this talented, misunderstood and tragic figure---

I am giving this 5 stars, 4 for the content and 1 for the price which offers great value for a DVD featuring over an hour and a half of facts, clips, interviews, photos and reports from her troubled youth in foster homes to her death in 1962. All aspects of her life are covered and nothing seems to have been brushed under the carpet, although some areas such as her affair with JFK are just brushed over. The quality of this DVD is good both picture and sound. There was quite a lot I had not seen before, some of her bit parts in films and photos taken before she was famous. I enjoyed the words of Marilyn from letters etc being voiced over by an actress.
If you are a fan of Marilyn then I am sure you will enjoy this DVD and like me, find something in it you haven't seen before.

got both dvds quickly brand new in wrapping but "Marilyn Portrait Of A Legend" had a mark on it and didnt work. couldn't be bothered to return so just ordered another one. Hopefully it won't be marked upon opening this time. "Marilyn Monroe We Remember" worked fine. I've watched all her documentaries as writing a book on her & this is not the best. The best ones in my opinion are "marilyn final days" and "the legend of marilyn monroe" although it is in black and white and I'm not a fan of black and white. This was good and all the way through someone is talking as marilyn but sounds nothing like her. Did enjoy though. Didn't say or show hardly anything on her death.
