5.0 out of 5 stars A Coffee Table Book That Will Change the Way You Think About Marilyn 4 Oct 2011
By Lillian Lemoning - Published on
"Intimate Exposures" is the kind of coffee table book that could save you from a terrible party. When the music is lame and the bar is empty, you sit down on the couch to take a breather and find this gorgeous book. An hour and a half later you've seen so many beautiful pictures of Marilyn that have never before been published. Most importantly, you'll discover a Marilyn different from the tragic figure the media loves to point to to say that sexuality and stardom destroys. Bernard [of Hollywood] knew Marilyn as a friend, and he documents her rise to stardom with the eye of both a journalist and a glamour photographer. (He was both in his day.) Bernard's Marilyn is beautiful, brave, and passionate, proud of her accomplishments, bruised but not broken, feeling every win and loss in her life with the same wide-eyed openness that made her a hypnotizing presence on screen. It's so exciting to see a Marilyn that isn't a victim. The tragedy is her death. Her life is another thing all together.

5.0 out of 5 stars ANNIVERSARY - Fifty Years Ago Today: The Death of a Legend 5 Aug 2012
By Grady Harp - Published on
On August 5, 1962, Marilyn Monroe's life ended. Though her career was rather short, the image she created and the person she was is just as strong fifty years later - if not more so. And who better to attribute a good deal of her success than Bruno Bernard who as a photographer who followed her from the beginning of her career to the end. Bruno Bernard's daughter Sarah Bernard has gathered all the photographs her father took of the Marilyn Monroe we all loved and remember. Here are the famous images of Marilyn in all her glamour, shots in her extravagant film costumes as well as the comfy clothes she wore as she pursued her dedication to acting training even after she became and international star.

The book includes images of Marilyn Monroe form her beginnings in 1946 through her marriages and on to the peak of her stardom. But not only does Sarah Bernard included all of the images from her fathers collection of well known photographs of Marilyn the star, but also many never before published photographs of the actress and glamour diva in her quieter, more pensive moments, that part of her vulnerable life that simply adds to the growth of her stature as a legend. There are notes from Bernard's journal that have not been public before and these notes prove that not only was Bruno Bernard one of Hollywood's most iconic photographers but also a memoirist worthy of reading.

There are many books about Marilyn Monroe being published this year of the anniversary of her death, but few are as touching as this lush monograph. Grady Harp, August 12

5.0 out of 5 stars Something special for every Marilyn fan, be they new or old! 19 Dec 2011
By David Lee - Published on
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Having already culminated a library of over 30 Marilyn Monroe books it would be hard to believe to find a new book on the goddess that would surprise me, amaze me and offer me something new.
I bought this book, not only to add to the collection, but for the sheer fact that there was a prospect of the book holding a handful of new images - and even at just a handful thats enough for me to want to own it!

I'm an admirer of Marilyn and find myself engaged by every photo shoot she ever did, so when I opened this book I was shocked to find that within its 200+ pages were MORE than JUST A HANDFUL of new images. In fact, I found that just about every image in this book I had not seen in any of my previous Marilyn book purchases! Some of the photos will be familiar but you may never have seen them published before and some of them you will know simply because of their iconic status (the photo in the white dress!), but this book is made up of mainly photos that you've never seen before - and even if you've seen a photo from a particular photoshoot, there's more photos from that shoot that you've never seen!

In the end this book turns into not a book containing a handful of new Marilyn images, but a treasure trove of new photos with a handful of old images. Bruno Bernard and his estate must hold such a tight grasp on these images that its very very rare to see them slip out of their hands and into the pages of another Marilyn book. For this reason, it makes this book something very special indeed, offering new pictures and new insights into Marilyn that one could not believe would be possible 60 years after her death.

This is a MUST have for any old or new Marilyn fan or book collector, it's one of the best I've ever gotten my hands on. You will not be disapointed!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely Photographs 24 Oct 2011

This book is full of many BEAUTIFUL photo's of Marilyn. It's a great size and all of the pictures are amazing quality. My only problem is some of the text. I don't really agree with some of the things the author seems to believe about Marilyn. I haven't fully read the book yet, I've only skimmed through. So perhaps I'm just taking things out of context. I will read the book soon enough. But honestly, I bought this book for the photos, which it has plenty of. And beautiful too! It really shows Marilyn at her finest and I'm very pleased with my purchase!
