Book Description

21 Jun 2012
50 years after her death, "Marilyn in Fashion" offers a fascinating new spin on Monroe history, and a feast for fashionistas. She was an incandescent movie star, legendary sex symbol and a woman whose private life fascinated the public - but the story never before showcased about Marilyn Monroe is her enduring impact on fashion. From the revealing nude sheath worn to sing "Happy Birthday" to JFK to the pleated white dress from "The Seven Year Itch", Marilyn's looks defied the 1950s era of poodle skirts and marked her as a fashion icon ahead of her time. "Marilyn in Fashion" is an informative, entertaining, exhaustively-researched profile of Monroe's enduring influence on the world of fashion, which traces the evolutions of her style, from wholesome sweetness early in her career, to serious sex kitten looks in the '50s, to elegant sophistication in the last years of her life. Behind-the-scenes stories reveal how the star often worked closely with designers to create looks befitting her image. Through out the book, additional insight is offered by quotes from designers, co-stars and Marilyn herself. Illustrated by hundreds of rare and never-before-published photos, this one-of-a-kind book presents the glamorous screen icon at her very best.

Review

"Daily Mail "(UK)
"Marilyn's iconic status as a film star overshadows her other major influence - on fashion and designers. From her uplifted white dress in The Seven Year Itch to her more casual sweaters and Capri pants, this sumptuous book is yet another excuse to gaze at Marilyn and the designers created for her by Hollywood's top fashion brains, captured by her favourite photographers.""Sunday Telegraph"'s "Stella Magazine" (UK)
"Published to mark 50 years since Monroe's death, "MARILYN IN FASHION" looks at her relationships with designers and make-up artists. The images of her early years, before she was a peroxide blonde, are reinventing." "Total Film" (UK)
"Showing how the star got to the top by dressing to thrill, it shines a new light on the shrewd intelligence working behind that pretty face."
"King Feature Syndicate""This is a fascinating book with hundreds of rare and never-before published photos. The insights from the designers, co-stars, and Marilyn herself, offer a behind-the-screens glimpse at one of the most extraordinary people of the twentieth century. "Marilyn in Fashion" is an absolute joy and a fitting tribute to the style evolution of one of Hollywood's ultimate icons."
"Newsday""We love the in-depth look at Marilyn's dresses, hair, makeup and accessories, and her relationships with different designers, from Norman Norell to Jean Louis."
Associated Press"Putting the spotlight on the designers that decorated Marilyn's famous figure, "Marilyn in Fashion" is an intriguing look at the way Monroe controlled her self-image via fashion. Full of full-color photos and divided in sections by designers such as Oleg Cassini and Emilio Pucci, the book tells the rarely told stories behind iconic looks such as the white dress she wore over the subway grate in "The Seven Year Itch" and the sequined gown she wore to sing "Happy Birthday" to President John Kennedy."

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding 24 Jun 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Being a fan of Marilyn Monroe's for almost 30 years, I have encountered the good, the bad and the ugly in MM books. This, I am very happy to say, is definitely one of the good. No, correct that, it is one of the great. In short it is nothing less than superb. The book is thick - much thicker than I thought it would be - and has many photographs that I have not seen before. The pages are heavy, the text is entertaining and informative, and the whole product - from the cover, to the beginning, to the end, is just amazing. I would recommend this to all Marilyn Monroe fans, as well as anyone interested in vintage fashion, and the Golden Age of Hollywood. Incredible book. Well done to all involved.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marilyn In Fashion 23 Jun 2012
By Allan
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Just received this book this morning and was very impressed. Superb quality, informative text and hundreds of photographs, both black and white and colour, dozens of which I have never seen before. I have over a hundred books on Marilyn so expect to have seen most of her photographs and there are usually a couple in each book that I haven't but not in this case! Highly recommended for any fans who are looking for new pics of Marilyn.

5.0 out of 5 stars Made with love 10 Aug 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a wonderful book, with great photos and beautiful artwork. It is clearly made with love and is not another attempt to cash in on the name of Marilyn with a piece of rubbish. This publication is a must for any fan of Marilyn, but also for people interested in dresses of the 50's and 60's.
