4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Beginnings... 26 May 2002
Format:Audio CD
Although she is one of the worlds most successful recording artists of today (and still has more highs to come!),Mariah's debut album went by modestly and did not see its best songs released. Those who claim Mariah had no urban appeal until '95's 'Fantasy',have not listened to her whole back cataloge.Predictabley, Mariah's debut is ballad laden, but the funk was there from the beginning with grooves like 'You Need Me' to compete with the released 'Someday'.'There's Got To Be A Way'is a Gospel tinged beauty.'ODB' was not the first to MC on one of Mariah's songs,as is shown on 'Prisoner'and 'All In Your Mind' is a breezy song with a fun breakdown as the song closes.
The worst mistake Sony made was to not release the hauntingly beautiful 'Sent From Up Abouve' which would have seen Mariah's name spread throughout the Club scene. It is a promising, chilled club track that would have shown that there were more sides to Mariah than the big balladiva.

Until now I'd never listened to a Mariah Carey album, I used to hear her songs on the radio and I always liked her voice, but I never felt the urge to sit down and listen to one of her albums. After seeing an impressive performance by her on X Factor recently, I decided to watch videos on youtube of her live performances over the years. I'd never realised how good she was live, especially during the first half of her career. I also hadn't realised that she wrote pretty much all her songs, so I decided it was only fair that I gave her albums a listen. I'm starting from the beginning and I'm going to review all of her albums to date, so here goes...

1) Vision Of Love: Her debut single and a great way to start the album. I admit i'm not familiar with this song or anything before the 'Music Box' album, because it wasn't until then that she made it big in the UK. It seems i've been missing out, because this is one of the best songs she's ever done and it sounds timeless. Great song structure and lyrics and I especially like the way she ends it, brilliant vocals. 10/10

2) There's Got To Be A Way: Serious and heartfelt subject matter, and an uplifting chorus. There's a big whistle note near the end that took me by suprise, nice track. 8/10

3) I Don't Wanna Cry: A ballad that starts off in a low key, then goes high for the chorus very smoothly. The production is flawless, and its a very emotional performance from Mariah. One of my favourites. 9/10

4) Someday: A more uptempo track, sounds strangely familiar, I might have heard this before and not known it was Mariah singing it. Catchy, good production and again, vocally impressive. As for the whistle notes at the very end, absolutely stunnning.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best debut album of all time 22 Aug 2009
By ARCLS
Format:Audio CD
The debut album of Mariah Carey, the one that launched one of the greatest music careers in history, it is truly a masterpiece in every way, incredible vocals, great songs, writing and production in general, she let everybody know she was here to stay for many, many years.
I'll make a track by track review:
1. Vision Of Love: Her first single, an incredible song to start an amazing album, incredible vocals and the first whistle of her career, surprising to anyone that hears it for the first time. Great lyrics and an amazingly created song, it doesn't use the regular formula Verse Chorus Verse... it breaks barriers. It won a grammy and was nominated for some others so I guess I'm not the only one who thinks this way. 10/10
2. There's Got To Be A Way: Definitely one of my favorites from all of her songs, she takes on a topic not very regular for her: the issues of the world, she said once she prefers to talk about love and other stuff because those problems shouldn't be reminded, I agree with her on that (although I also enjoy listening to other artists like Shakira or U2 when they do social comments, especially Shakira's metaphors). To comment on the musical field, I think it is a great track with outstanding vocals like the belted notes and that really high whistle that fits very well with the whole anger and desperation she feels for the hungry children, bigotry and other concerning issues. 10/10
3. I Don't Wanna Cry: Another one of my favorites, very strong track, the first one without whistling and it really doesn't need it, nice lyrics and the vocals are really good, she goes low and high with all the belting. The music is also really good and it's the kind of song you may want to skip but I advise you not to, because you'll be missing on a lot. 10/10
4.
