Timeless African Gem 19 Nov 2000
Format:Audio CD
This is one of those exceptional albums that stands the test of time. This is classic soul music from an era when every musician put his heart into a track. And who has a bigger heart than the maestro himself, Sam Mangwana. Each track sounds better than the last, no small feat when the album starts with the classic Bolero-esque, MARIA TEBBO.

my favourites: AFFAIRE DISCO and WAKA WAKA.

Takes you back in time to glorious nights of over two decades ago. (Also check out the album "Sangonini" by Mangwana graduates, The Quatre Etoiles).

Total music time: 58 minutes

In recent years the music of West Africa - especially Mali - has really dominated the World Music market. And there has been lots to enjoy from the likes of Tinawiren and Ali Farka Toure.

And yet 20 years ago it was the music of the Central Africa - in particular the Democratic Republic of Congo - that was preeminent. And great through much West African music is, it can sometimes seem brittle and harsh compared to the liquid gold of the greatest Central African artists - Rochereau, Franco and Sam Mangwana. And this album from Mangwana perfectly exemplifies the fluid, mesmeric beauty of that music. The quality of the musicianship is awe inspiring, the tightness and yet relaxed quality of the band defies logic, and the virtuosity of the guitar playing puts most western guitar players to shame. And as for the rhythms - well, if you can sit still to this then you must be dead.

It is risky to buy albums of African music recorded 30 years ago - the quality of the recording can sometimes be poor. But here - despite originating in the late 70s - the recording is top notch. The title track, which at sixteen minutes still feels too short, is worth the price of the album alone. For me, the next two tracks (Tehimurenga Zimbabwe and Bana Ba Cameroun) are equally strong. The second half of the album is more prosaic by comparison - but by that stage you are so blissed out you just dont care.

If you are familiar with African music but somehow, like me, missed out on this album, then it is a must-have. If you are new to African music and wondering what all the fuss is about, this is a great place to start.
