Product Description

Luiz Kim, angry and unsettled since being kicked out of the Marines, decides to seek out the sister he has not seen in more than twenty-five years.

He makes contact. But, after flying halfway around the world to Japan for an emotional reunion, he is stunned to learn that she has just been murdered in church, while at prayer.

A killer is on the loose, and it is clear that he is targeting members of the small church community. But why?

Luiz is determined to use his military background to hunt down the killer. And quickly it becomes apparent that the key is a mysterious card left at each murder scene – a card depicting the Maria Kannon, a statue of a Buddhist deity that was once revered by persecuted Japanese Christians.

As the stakes go higher and higher in this adrenaline-fueled thriller - another in Martin Roth's acclaimed Military Orders series of international thrillers - Luiz is forced to confront his notions of what it means to be alive. And whether he is ready to die. (Cover design by Romit Berger.)

Praise for Martin Roth’s thriller “Prophets and Loss”:

“A thrilling ride that begins as a story of murder and revenge and ends as a reflection on loss and forgiveness....Fast-paced and edgy.” - SydneyAnglicans.net

“Wow!.…When “Prophets and Loss” arrived…I certainly wasn’t expecting a meaty murder mystery cum terrorist plot. And when I realized that’s what it was, I certainly wasn’t then expecting Roth’s Johnny Ravine mystery to deliver such a fabulous gospel message….This is a great book for a Christian or as a starter for a non-Christian. A fabulous surprise.” - The Presbyterian Pulse

Praise for Martin Roth’s thriller “Hot Rock Dreaming” (a finalist in the 2011 Australian Christian Book of the Year awards):

“Roth is a Christian author and, although spiritual warfare is crucial to the plot, this book is still a murder mystery…Thought-provoking and an enjoyable read.” – On Fire

“Highly readable…You will be both entertained and educated.” – Journey

4.0 out of 5 stars A story with a difference 12 April 2012
By Aggie C
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This concise novel with its plain, approachable style offers a number of areas of interest, including an international flavour, a well-researched and (to this reader) unfamiliar setting of modern Japan and Korea, and a theme of spiritual warfare within physical persecution of a newly-planted church. Perhaps deliberately, more questions are raised than are answered.
While there is a strong Christian element, Mr Roth has no apparent axe to grind. He avoids dogma and treats aspects of Buddhism sympathetically. There is more emphasis on the swift action of the narrative than on philosophical speculation or deep character development. This makes for an undemanding read which, coupled with the exotic background, should appeal to a broad spectrum of readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars More fine and exciting reading... 22 Feb 2012
By Roger Bruner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Many authors fail to follow up a good first book with an equally good second one, but Martin Roth's The Maria Kannon lived up to and exceeded my expectations. (See my review of Brother Half Angel.)

I appreciated the fact that Kannon kept violence to a minimum without diminishing the suspense and intrigue. I enjoyed getting to know the characters.

Brother Half Angel appeared again in this book and--to put it in the colloquial--he's a piece of work! The least perfect hero one might ever encounter--and yet such an effective one.

Luiz makes a good addition to the military order. He's quite different from Brother Half Angel, yet someone I definitely look forward to seeing more of in future books.

I liked having The Maria Kannon and Brother Half Angel set in different countries. That helped to keep me from getting the details mixed up between books.

The information Martin provides about the setting is an integral part of the story, and that helped to draw me in more.

Martin's Military Order series has been a wonderful read. In fact, I just bought book three! *big smile*

5.0 out of 5 stars An exciting and intriguing tale 31 Jan 2012
By PepperPete - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Characters from Roth's first book in this series such as the volatile Brother Half Angel, reappear in this story. We are also introduced to Luiz, a complex man, of Korean ethnicity, born in Brazil,a citizen of America and an ex marine. Then there is Harel who like Luiz carries memories from a painful past. Each personality walks in faith as they interpret their allegiance to Christ, yet with the ghosts of past failure or trauma.

The idea of a protective force, sending out military trained people to enter into situations where the church is in danger,is a unique approach. The author doesn't judge whether this is good or bad, but rather lets the concept create a story that is exciting and intriguing.

I loved the setting in Japan and the detail including domestic furnishings and grand mountain scenery. It took me back to a short stay I had in that country. In the story I discovered the comforting warmth of a kotatsu table and then the discomforting history of Christianity in early Japanese years. The Kannon held many secrets.

I found myself checking for more information on some of these things, searching online. It gave me an appreciation for the understanding of things oriental that this author has knowledge of.

A great yarn and I will be looking for his other books to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Maria Kannon 5 July 2012
By Carol A. Brown - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The Maria Kannon is set in northern Japan's mountains--a place of utter beauty, but shrouded in superstition. Luiz Kim, a Christian, forced to retire from the Marines, who had become his "family." He loses his identity, his direction and his father; his mother and sister long gone. Having had an unsettled childhood with many moves and living in two different cultures and speaking three languages he longs for a sense of belonging and purpose. He begins to look for his long lost sister, and finds her--in Japan! He introduces her to Christ and she too, becomes a believer but is killed the night before they meet.

Her pastor, Yu-Han Kang, makes connections, translates Japanese and his home becomes something of a staging area for the investigation into Luiz's sister's murder. Luiz is joined by Brother Half Angel, whom we have met before, who quickly recruits him as a soldier for the Korean church which sponsors a special order tasked with helping Christians in danger by whatever means. Together they expose the forces behind the killing, stop the killer before he kills a third person and Luiz is able to see a direction for his life in which he can begin to resolve his personal issues of faith, and belonging in his new "home" with the Mercendarians.

If you enjoyed Brother Half Angel or Military Orders, you will enjoy this book as well. It is one suspense filled, fast paced novel! The action literally does not stop. Oh, there are lulls but then it takes off again. My interest never waned and I learned things about Korea and Japan that I did not know. For example, about the Maria Kannon, a Buddhist statue. And to find out the importance of the Kannon and its place in the story...you must read the book!

I love how Christianity is just one of the pieces of the story. There is no preaching, just reporting of the facts! The people involved just happen to be Christian. I would heartily recommend the book to all lovers of Christian thriller/suspense novels.
