Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Marc Cohn's 1991 debut harkens back to the more sophisticated rock and pop inflections of singer-songwriters of two decades ago. His supple, velvety baritone and elegant piano-based arrangements frame shrewdly crafted songs ripe with pop touches, none more intricate or deftly executed than the set's epochal "Walking In Memphis", an epiphany rooted in rich musical history, studded with allusions to Elvis and Al Green, Beale Street and Graceland, and buoyed by a rippling piano motif and surging gospel choruses. Giving the set depth, as well as commercial legs, are the infectious and intimate evocations of his father in "Silver Thunderbird"; the husky meditations of "Ghost Train";a sexy update of Willie Dixon's "29 Ways" in "Dig Down Deep" (the probable seed for Paul Simon's antithetical "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover"); and the fervent lover's anthem, "True Companion". --Sam Surtherland

Listening to this album, I can't believe how Marc Cohn isn't a major household name. Very few people that I know seem to have heard of him, which I think is a total disgrace. 'Walking in Memphis' is obviously a classic, despite Cher's bludgeoning of it (what irritates me more than anything is that the general public probably recognize her version more than the original). All the songs on this album keep to the quality of the aforementioned title, including the excellent 'Silver Thunderbird' and 'Strangers in a Car'. A marvelous album.

Underrated 23 Nov 2007
By Spider Monkey HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
This artist is seriously underrated. This album has stood the test of time and is as uplifting and moving as the first time I heard it. 'Dig Down Deep' and 'Walk On Water' never fail to move me, but the whole album is incredible. There is some great piano and moving lyrics and song writing. Not one song is dud and I can't recommend it highly enough. I love this artist, all of his albums and want more, more, more!

Feel free to check out my blog which can be found on my profile page.
