Product Description

Product Description

16 September 2007 saw the 60th anniversary of Marc Bolan s birth, and the 30th Anniversary of his death. Bolan remains an extraordinary cult figure, as contemporary an icon today as in his heyday of 1970-73. From Tolkien-influenced acoustic songs with Tyrannosauras Rex to wowing teenage girls on Top of the Pops, the curly-haired London boy had the cosmic raw material to turn himself into a star. He came back on the crest of the late 1970s new wave, until a tragic car accident dimmed his star forever. In their unsurpassed biography, Chris Welch and Simon Napier-Bell explore the career of the first superstar of glam-rock.

An average reprint ?? 16 May 2007
By DavyA TOP 500 REVIEWER
This book has done the rounds before (circa 1982 ??)the cover has changed but I assume it was planned to have this re published to coincide with / cash in on the 30th anniversary of Marc's death(as when I orginally wrote this review, even the cover being shown on Amazon was the same as the "old" edition).
Overall, this is a fair biography with some interesting reminisces from those who knew Marc best & some pretty good photos.
However, if you want a really good Bolan biography your best bet (& this is only my opinion !) will be Mark Paytress's "Bolan- Rise & Fall Of A 20th Century Superstar" which is far more balanced, better researched, more detailed & far better written - this effort by Chris Welch is really only average in comparison & seems a bit disjointed at times (mainly because so much of the narrative consists of often, seemingly unconnected quotes form Marc & others).
As I say, it's not terrible but suffers from comparison, which makes it seem pretty average, sadly it's also infected by the frankly tiresome Simon Napier Bell.
One big positive is the wealth of very good photos - if you like these, coupled with reading quotations - this could be the one for you.

Bolan, born to boogie 21 July 2010
For true Bolan fans this title is short on new facts, but photos are very good. Hardly an 'in-depth' biography.

Bop God 6 May 2007
A fitting tribute to the bopping elf and glam rock god...

T,Rex were the true inventors of Brit Pop - and Bolan was the Godfather of Punk and the true inspiration for the BUZZ KIDS and the Joey Teen Generation.

This book is a classic ROCK biog...
