Product Description

Product Description

The popularity of the marathon and half marathon has increased dramatically in recent years as growing numbers of people have become aware of the life-changing experiences and the health benefits that result from training for, and competing in, a 13.1 - or 26.2 - mile race. Notwithstanding this, marathons and half marathons are extremely testing endurance races and entrants need to be properly informed so that they can train and prepare in an appropriate way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous reference book, 29 Dec 2007
By A. Campbell-Howard - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is the best running training book I have come across. It doesn't just apply to marathons - could easily apply to 10k's as well. Chapters are all well laid out so you can simply jump to the section that is relevant to you. If you are worried about your knees or are wanting a really appropriate training regime this book has it all thought through for you. No myths or beating about the bush - it tells you how - or perhaps how not... you can get through it.

5.0 out of 5 stars At Last - A decent marathon training book, 27 Nov 2007
I am seriously toying with the idea of running the London Marathon in April and spent ages looking for a decent book to help me with my training. I was recommended this book purely on the advice of a friend who hadn't read it, but mentioned that it is the same author who had written the marathon training guide supplied by her charity when she ran London last year and found his advice really helpful.
Although I've only just started training, i can honestly say i love this book. It's perhaps not as "pretty" as other publications, with fluffy cartoons everywhere, but it is by far the most comprehensive training guide i have come across. All my anxieties about what to eat and when, how to stay hydrated and how to deal with the dreaded injuries and monotony of training are all clearly explained and the chapter on motivation is also really helpful. The photos are great too - but the faces on some people finishing the marathon makes me wonder what I'm letting myself in for!
I've a long way to go before the race but i would defo recommend this book to anyone flirting with the idea of running a half or full marathon.
FLM 2008 here we come!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for beginners, 22 April 2009
By S. Thorpe - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As a first time marathon runner taking part in Sunday's London Marathon, I needed a book that would help me every step of the way. Graeme Hilditch's book has done just that - taking me from struggling to run for a bus right up to the marathon distance. Personally, I also found the pictures helped a lot and complimented the text. Most other books I looked at do not have pictures which makes them harder work especially as a beginner when you need all the incentive you can get.

As a result of following the training guide I have actually enjoyed the training and might even do another marathon later in the year.
