Product Description

One of the most beautiful works of Latin-American literature. A young man discovered the power of love when he fallen in love with the virginal Maria. A story to read only to remember how difficult being human can be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amor en su plenitud 20 Mar 2001
By "carito_eab" - Published on

4.0 out of 5 stars María by Yorge Isaacs 12 May 2012

I read this 19th century novel in the original Spanish as part of a class, and purchased the English version to go along with it. It was probably a difficult text to translate because of the flowery language (typical of the Romantic period), but one error stuck out like a sore thumb. Shotguns are often used in deer hunting, especially within confined areas when others may be in the vicinity. They are also powerful enough to kill a jaguar ("tigre" in the text). During two "cacerías" (hunts) in the novel the translator used "rifle" instead of the correct word "shotgun" (escopeta). Such a simple error made suspect the rest of the translation. The English version is also partially abridged, with the chapters of the Spanish text often not coinciding with the English.

2.0 out of 5 stars tiny print 6 Mar 2012

English is my first language but I have a working knowledge of Spanish. I have lived in Cali, Colombia, the home of the author, Jorge Isaacs, and have always wanted to read the beloved story, in Spanish, which is considered a national classic. However, when I received my copy of the book, I was susrprised to see that the font was so tiny. I am still, after several weeks, strugglilng to get through it. I'm not sure I'll finish it because the size of the print is so distracting which makes it especiallly difficult in a second language.

Really good reading for advanced spanish composition. I used the book for a 400 level college course that required the reading.
