Format:Mass Market Paperback
Marquesta Kar-Thorn is book set within the realms of Anason and the Legendary Dragonlance series created by weis and Hickman. It explores the early years of Marquesta Kar-Thorn, the daughter of a sea captain whom will be familar with readers of the original trilogy having made a brief apperance in the second book Dragons of Winter night.
The story is set in Taladas, home of the minoaurs and a region not often explored in the many of Dragonlance novels avalible, The notable exception being the books written by Richard A Knaak. Readers not familar with the dragonlance setting may not find this as quite an enjoyable book as those who have followed the series from its first incarnations although it is important and nice to note that you need not have read any of the previous books before you read this one, Regular readers will simply have a greater understanding and apreciation relating to the social culture and location of the book setting. Being an avid reader of the Dragonlance series myself, one of the first questions I ask myself a few pages into a new novel is "Does it capture the essence of the Dragonlance world?" the answer to this is yes, The book remains true and faithful to the genre set down by Weis and Hickman. For newcomers it is a introduction into the world of Dragonlance but far from the best that the series has to offer.
The Story follows the exploits of Marquesta Kar-Thorn who though a cruel twist of fate is thrust into a race against time and also a journey of self discovery which will change her life forever. Throughout the book she must contend with not only the normal perils that face any hardy adventuer but also
the battle within herself to win the respect of her colleges and discover her own self belief, Will she preveil in glory or forever doubt what she could have been.
I personally enjoyed this book although found it a little lacking in some areas, The character devlopment is a bit limited in places, the plot is fairly simple and the ending somewhat predictable but bearing this in mind it does not detract from the authors good use of varied and descriptive vocabulary with the ability to set scenes and picture in the minds eye to good effect.
The story itself incorporates several differents elements which keep you intrested although few are explored with to any great depth for the die hard fans yet leaves enough for a solid read. In summary I would recomend this books to both fans of series and newcomers alike as it is an enjoyable book but not on the same level as some of the other fantasy works currently around.

Wonderful Reading! 15 Jan 2000

This was a wonderful book that took me far away from my every day life and threw me into the mouth of a giant octopus! Mixed with an emotional battle bettween a young woman fighting for the life of her father and a minotaur lord who has an obssesion with strange creatures it is a book I would recommend to every one. Just a little touch of romance adds the right key. If you are looking for the perfect adventure book this is the one for you!
Too much like a role playing game 25 Oct 2011

Obviously being based on TSR's role playing game setting, you need to draw on the standard fantasy role playing elements: magic, fantastic creatures, diamond-in-the-rough heroines, dastardly villains, etc. All of which the author draws upon frequently. Unfortunately that's all she utilizes. Concepts such as character development, plot, pacing, and good storytelling are neglected. The book is essentially a series of combat scenes clearly based on sitting around the gaming table that are thinly connected by a weak narrative. There are much better books within the Dragonlance franchise
Why Maquesta? Why not? 4 April 2005

Format:Mass Market Paperback
This is one of the best DragonLance books I have ever read. I have been reading this series since the seventh grade and have read at least 45 books, and this has been one of the most dazzling books of the series. The truth is, a lot of the DragonLance characters get very boring and repetive after a while. Most authors use the same characters, elves, knights, humans, dwarves, and kender in their books. It is always the same group of people based on the group from the original Trilogy. Maquesta Kar-Thon provides new faces, new races, and a new story to the series. I loved the original characters and colorful ride, plus the fact that this is the first and probably only story where there are no kender characters.

What also is nice about this story is that it can be read outside of the series and the reader can still understand what is going on. The book does not completely rely the full DragonLance background and the casual reader can sit down and enjoy this book to its fullest potential without becoming confused.
