Book Description

29 Sep 2009
Following on from the success of Mapping London, Mapping New York is a richly illustrated survey of the urban and social history of New York City. From early woodblock engravings to the latest satellite images available of Manhattan, these maps show the intricate story of the development of one of the world's most populous cities. Beautifully illustrated with distinctive maps dating back to the 16th Century, when New York was known as New Amsterdam and founded by the Dutch as a commercial trading post, right up to the present day. Mapping New York provides a pictorial history of the city both documenting it being both a leader in commerce and one of the most built up urban areas in the world. Mapping New York focuses on maps from the 20th and 21st century, arranged thematically featuring maps on population, military, water, transport, commerce, crime as well as planning and developing maps and boundaries of the five boroughs.

Review

''This British-produced volume is a must-have for any New Yorker who seeks to understand the city from the ground up.'' --cityArts: New York's Review of Culture

An intriguing and fanciful overview […] From the 150 images, a reader can glean details about history, topography, development, mass transit and even which neighbourhoods send the most people to city jails. --New York Times

The book offers multiple perspectives on the city in the form of a trove of historical maps and some imaginative newer attempts to record space and experience in two dimensions. --Architecture Today

Compelling collection of maps in a beautifully designed book. High quality production and finishing. I only wished there would be a bit more text on the overall (cartographic) history of NY. Still I highly recommand this book to people with a love for maps, urbanism and the history of both.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating history in maps 6 Dec 2010
By Warwick C - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is a well presented fascinating history of New York in maps.
It also includes some quirkier maps that make interesting perusal.
The only reason I do not give it 5 stars is that some maps are printed at a size which prevents adequate detail from being seen, even with a magnifier. On the other hand, the publisher has printed extracts of some maps at a larger scale so they can be easily seen, just not enough of them are treated this way.
Well worth the modest outlay for any map or New York history enthusiast.

This is exactly what I wanted for insight in to mapping over the years. I also purchased a copy for a friend who was very pleased with the map history.
