DVD Description

Miss Emmeline Lucas, known universally to her friends as Lucia, is a dreadful snob, but in Miss Elizabeth Mapp of Mallards, Lucia meets her match.  On the surface they are the most genteel of society ladies, but beneath the veneer of manners and etiquette lies a bitter seething malice. Striving for social supremacy the two women battle to out-charm each other as they vie for the position of 'toast of the town'. Starring Prunella Scales (TV's Fawlty Towers), Geraldine McEwan (The Magdalene Sisters) and Nigel Hawthorne (The Madness of King George), adapted from the stories of E.F.Benson.

What a joy 12 Mar 2004
By A. Butterfield TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
This is a four DVD set, presented with a slip case and a very attractive fold out case. Very good value too for four discs. The transfer is okay though there's a softness and lack of contrast sometimes. This is not surprising given that it's a transfer from TV quality video.
The rest is a delight from start to finish. Geraldine McEwan's Lucia, Nigel Hawthorne's Georgie and Prunella Scales' Mapp are three of the best characters ever created on television. The interplay between them is toe-curling and yet totally hilarious. I can never understand why this hasn't been repeated over and over again on TV like Fawlty Towers. It's also a delight to see the setting for Tilling, which positively glows, and the gentle 1930s life it depicts will have you yearning for those times. This is something you will be able to watch over and over again.

Every episode of the two series are a joy, with each round of genteel hostilities cleverer and wittier than the last. The whole cast are perfectly selected, especially Geraldine McEwan as the effortlessly regal Lucia and Prunella Scales as the evil Miss Mapp (if you thought she played a bitch as Sybil Fawlty, then just wait until you see her as Elizabeth Mapp), not to mention the wonderful supporting cast including Nigel Hawthorne as the effeminate Georgie and Mary Mcloud as the wonderful Diva, always on hand to put Elizabeth in her place, and a reliable barometer of feeling between the two leading lady rivals. This series is enormously entertaining, with the exceptional exchange of so many sugared but lethal words between the characters. What a pity there have not been more drama series of this quality of recent years. Oh, and buy the books too :-)

If anyone wants to know why so many reviewers of past
television series wax so lyrical and lament so strongly
for great programs of the past, watch and enjoy this series.

The acting is superb, the location is gorgeous, the whole project is faithful to the book and the characters in it.

As with the P.G.Woodhouse books, this series's characters are all outrageous, over the top and immensly loveable.
The whole make believe world grows seemlessly and your enjoyment is the better for it.

In todays cynical world this is pure escapism, to an age that never really existed (but we wish it had).... Wonderful

Geraldine McEwan, Nigel Hawthorne and Prunella Scales must
have had a wonderful time making this series,
they all shine and their enthusiasm is infectious.

Enjoy
