Thinking about buying one of these - just wondering if anyone who has already bought one could advise me about cost/ease of updating the maps - do you have to pay for downloading these from Garmin website? I know that Halfords are selling a newer version called 1340 LMT (which comes with free lifetime map updates) but costs more obviously... much appreciated!
I bought the Garmin 1340 LMT from Halfords for around £139.00. It does come with lifetime updates and I downloaded relatively easily from the Garmin web-site when i got it home. Just remember to register the unit with garmin first, because it identifies the serial number with the free download package. Otherwise it will say that the unit doesn`t qualify. I was told that you can buy a life-time upgrade package for any sat-nav for around £90.00, but I am very happy with my 1340LMT so far, and reckon it was a bargain.
I have seen the one in Holfords with the free map updates. Does that mean as this one here is much cheaper that it does not come with the free lifetime map updates? It doesnt say it does here in the description so presume this is exclusive to Halfords.
If someone can confirm that this does have the updates I will buy :)
It is only the Garmin 1340 LMT that has free updates, not the ones sold much cheaper. I`m not sure if it the LMT is exclusive to Halfords, but I bought mine from them and am very happy with it. Find the menu easier to use than my previous TomTom.
I bought the 1340LMT and attempted to run a map update. The lifetime updater download worked OK, the new map download worked, but then everything stalled when installing the map update to the device, so I cancelled the update. I phoned Garmin Customer Support and was e-mailed a link to their Web Updater download (www.garmin.com/webupdater). I ran this to install the web updater - there are simple instructions to follow with this (I think it updates something else in the unit to enable the lifetime update downloader to finish installing map updates). Finally, I could install the update.
As I am working with an iPad on the move I am not sure how I will effect the Garmin updates? As a new user of iPad I believe that it does not take USB connections. Maybe this is a question for Apple? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Be careful about the updates. A few months ago I paid out for the lifetime package on my Garmin Nuvi 1390 and this week I dropped it and now it does not work. I wanted to buy another Garmin and checked to see if I could transfer the lifetime package, which was not cheap, to a new one and you can't, it's for the life of the particular unit. Take care of your Satnav, don't drop it
