Two great albums! 27 April 2010
These two albums were released either side of her UK #2 album "Heartbreaker". "Friends In Love" was released in early 1982 and was beautifully produced by two time Grammy winner Jay Graydon. It has a laidback light soulful feel with the standout tracks being "Never Gonna Let You Go"(a hit for Sergio Mendes the following year), "For You" and "Betcha By Golly Wow". It also includes two duets with Johnny Mathis "Friends In Love" and "Got You Where I Want You" (which also feature on his album of the same name). Following the success of "Heartbreaker", 5 of the 10 tracks from this album appeared on Dionne's summer of 1983 UK #11 album "The Collection".

Luther Vandross took over as producer for "How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye" for this late 1983 release. The UK edition was re-titled "So Amazing" and peaked at only #60 in the charts. The standout tracks were the softer ballads like "So Amazing", "What Can a Miracle Do" and Michael McDonald's "I Can Let Go Now". The production and musicianship are second to none. The duet with Vandross "How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye" really blends their voices well. The disco flavoured "Got a Date" and "I Do It 'Cause I Like It" have not aged so well, but overall there are enough 5 star performances on each of these albums to keep fans, old or new, very happy. It comes with a booklet packed full of detail regarding each album and includes full page reproductions of each album cover.

a date with Dionne 8 April 2010
At last Dionne Warwicks mithycal albums come out in a double package.
The superbe friends in love album already exists in a japanese import.
The following album, how many times can we say goodbye makes its cd debute.
This album contains eight songs of superbe quality including 2 uptempoed songs, got a date and I do it cause I like it.
Slightly overproduced, Miss Warwick manages to rise high above the powerful orchestra.

I had these 2 albums on vinyl back in the day and it was nice to rediscover them.
How Many Times (which I think was called So Amazing) on first release has some quite ghastly eighties stompers like Got a Date but yields a beautiful version of Michael Mcdonald's I Can Let Go now and a couple of other lovely ballads. Friends in Love is more consistent and has real style, a couple of very slick duets with Johnny Mathis and a lovely sheen of pure class. Terrific value for both these albums and only a couple of tracks you might want to skip.
