Charles Guard narrates this documentary detailing the vintage transport systems to be found on the Isle of Man, which include the world's oldest electric railway, the longest running horsetrams, two steam railways, a mountain railway and cable cars. Archive footage and photographs are used to trace the transport system's development and to examine how it has adapted to the demands of the 21st century, and trips along the various lines are also featured.

Although, it seems that the Isle of Man and its unique railway and tramway systems have finally run out of centenaries to celebrate, there is always room for another video on the Island's systems. Those of you out there, who have not had their fix of Manx railways for a little while, this new film from Duke Video entitled Manx Trains and Trams, could be that much needed top-up. More noted for their high speed motorsports videos, this is Island based Duke's first venture into the world of the Isle of Man's railways.
At 70 minutes long, the film is much short than recent lengthy Manx submissions from Oakwood Video, but then again its not aimed at the die hard Manx railway enthusiast. Manx Trains and Trams has been produced as a middle of the road, more marketable video, with a universal appeal. This video is a watchable mixture of all the remaining Manx systems and those railways and tramways long since gone.
Intermixed with all the modern footage is various old B/W clips of both the Island's railways and of the Isle of Man. In fact, compared with other past Manx railway videos, this one looks a lot more at the Island itself, which is good, if you have only ever seen the Isle of Man out of a carriage window!

Manx Trains and Trams is pretty, well put together, fairly factual and ideal "fix" for the Manx railway enthusiast who is missing their dose of Manx Beyer, Peacock steam locomotives and bracing rides on the MER's open toastracks. As long as you don't expect to be bombarded with technical details, then Manx Trains and Trams could be for you. Just sit back as they say, and enjoy the ride.
