4.0 out of 5 stars Existential agents, 1 Sep 2008
By David Ford "avid fan" (Cheltenham) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is the third Manual of Exalted Power for the second edition of Exalted, and gives you the tools required to play as a FOURTH type of Exalted (if you've been following the supplements thus far). The Sidereal Exalted offer yet another way to play the game- despite being the ultimate martial artists, they are not as combat-oriented as the others, and being based in Heaven, they are cast more in the way of controllers than the controlled.
Like the other Manuals, this is a chunky hardback with everything you need to run Sidereal games contained within. After a brief introduction, the first chapter gives the history and an overview of the Sidereals, including factions and major players. The second chapter defines the Bureau of Destiny- the heavenly organisation most of the Sids work for,its rules and the gods that work alongside it.
Chapter Three gives the rules for character creation in brief before the fourth (traits) and fifth (charms) go into full detail. Many of the Sidereal charms rely on warping and influencing reality, which can lead for some neat twists in any campaign. The sixth chapter contains the rules for astrology, allowing for more powerful destiny-changing effects.
As with the others, the last chapter gives storytelling tips on running Sidereal-based games, as well as overarching themes and motifs. While the book is nicely presented, a star is lost solely because the material within is not as easy to work into an ongoing campaign. However, for groups after a more cosmic, clandestine Exalted experience and who are willing to put the work into a whole new campaign, this is another good purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great manual to the exalted seers, 30 Aug 2008
By F. Nilsson (Karlstad, Sweden) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The book in brief:

The first chapter describes the history of the setting from the Sidereals' perspective and give a few pages about the Sidereal factions.

The second chapter outlines the divine bureaucracy that employs the Sidereal Exalted. I found this chapter somewhat confusing. I liked the ideas presented a lot, but I don't really know what to do with them.

The third chapter is a modified version of character creation summary table found in the core book.

The fourth chapter is twenty-two pages full of adjustments to the traits in core book with the aim of making the game to work better with Sidereal Exalted as player characters.

The fifth chapter introduces new charms for the Sidereals to use.

The sixth chapter gives an interesting idea on a way to run divination in a way reminding on the Norns from Norse mythology.

The seventh chapter feels like the "don't panic" text on the fictional book "the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". It is as if the writers had realized that they just had given the aspiring storyteller about two hundred pages worth of assorted ideas, and wanted to help him to make something of the ideas.

Final verdict:

The book is quite well written, and I can see two potential buyers of this product. The first, and probably the most numerous, is the storyteller that wants to evolve Sidereals above the stereotype. The second buyer would be the potential sidereal exalted player who needs official character creation rules. I'd say that neither would be disappointed, and I fully recommend the book.

The main thing that prevented me from giving the book five stars is that the authors tried too hard to elevate the sidereals above the stereotype, and created a book that is hard to relate to at times. This problem is to some extent solved by the final chapter, but for me that was about two hundred pages to late for the highest star ranking.

I also find the art in the book a bit lacking compared to other White Wolf books. The art far from unappealing, but it doesn't really meet the high standard I have come to expect from the company.
