I have all of Maya's DVD classes and began with her first release called 'Detox and Destress' which for me was the best place to start as I feel it is the better class for a beginner - I still work with it regularly as it is so good. I have a daily practice of Kundalini Yoga in the morning and have been practising for 2 years now. I began my yoga journey with Hatha Yoga, a beautiful practice that I did for approx 1.5 years before discovering my perfect fit - Kundalini Yoga. This will be a life long practice for me as I totally resonate with it and benefit hugely.
I intend to review the DVD classes in this 3 box set seperately and as I do them.
I have watched all three classes through and the standard of production, music and teaching is high - which is what you get from Maya. Maya is a wonderful teacher, down to earth and compassionate. You only do what you feel up to doing on any given day. I find the music very uplifting and inspirational.
Each DVD Class has a section of introduction which Maya describes the reason for doing these classes and the benefits that you will gain after working with the Mantra's. I found this to be well worth watching through before doing the classes and I gained knowledge and understanding.
DVD Class - Ek Ong Kar
I was very pleasantly surprised when I worked with this DVD. It begins with a Tune In via mantra which is always the beginning of a Kundalini yoga class. From there comes clear instruction and demonstration from Maya of a lovely set of exercises which I found achieveable and grounding. This includes lying on your left side with the right leg in the air and holding it there with your fingers whilst doing 'breath of fire' - a fast sniffing type breath through the nose with mouth closed. This particular posture is done three times in total with different breathing. There is a period of squatting and standing, forward bending and some relaxation inbetween also. Following this set I felt very very calm and ready for the long Ek Ong Kar mantra - you can do this for as long as you want to, start of with a few minutes and build up. It is done whilst seated in a cross legged position (easy pose) so you can stretch legs at any time. This was a wonderful experience for me, I am starting my day in a beautiful way and feel calm and very happy! Looking forward to the next class and will update review with my findings.
DVD Class - Har
I did this class on Sunday for the first time and today is Tuesday - I can still feel the Mantra vibrating through me! It was amazing and I managed to do the mantra for the full duration of time (I sat in Rock Pose instead of Easy Pose so that my legs didn't trouble me).
The class begins with a lovely warm up and set of exercies that I found achievable and enjoyable. Not too strenuous for a Sunday morning but enough to release the spine and get the mind focused and ready for the mantra session.
The mantra is chanted whilst moving the hands so that the index fingers meet and then the little fingers meet - making a circle with you hands in a repeated up and down movement and all the while you do the mantra. I found it to be very powerful and felt so light and energised afterwards - not to mention confident and capable! Wonderful.
DVD Class - Ram Das
I think that this may be my favourite class of the three - although I don't like to choose a favourite as they are all equally good and all have many benefits to offer.
As with the other classes a Tune in via the mantra 'Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo' is the first experience and then we are off with the warm up exercises, these help loosen you up and release the spine and of course get the circulation flowing to achieve a warm up. The set that follows is delicious - it is just so lovely to do and the postures and exercises are pretty much what I want for a Sunday morning class. Maya guides you through effortlessly and is so gentle in nature that I am completely as ease and my mind focused and clear.
The mantra for this one Ram Das is a beautiful beautiful healing mantra and this is done for approximately 22 minutes, during this mantra meditation I really do feel like a healing and lifting sensation occurs and it is so relaxing to do.
Tune out with Sat Nam mantra ends the class and throughout the day I am well balanced and calm yet energised! A truly unique and beautiful experience.
So there we have it - all three classes have been worked with and I feel blessed to have them, each one produces different effects and subtle changes and all three are very enjoyable to work with. Maya has produced yet another brilliant series of classes - thank you.
