Product Description

The eighth in our series of Clifford T. Ward releases. Mantle Pieces was originally released on Charisma Records in 1973 and was Clifford's 3rd solo album.

· The album has not been available on CD for almost 20 years.

· The album contains one of his best loved singles `Scullery'.

· The CD includes two bonus tracks: the single `Jayne' (from Andromeda Spiral), + its b/side `Maybe I'm Right'.

· The comprehensive CD booklet features an extensive UK Discography, sleeve notes and images. The front cover features the original album cover.

· The album has been mastered using the original master tapes.

· Clifford's reputation as a singer/songwriter lives on. His very active fan club "The Friends Of Clifford T. Ward" whose patron is Sir Tim Rice, support all attempts to promote the aims and works of Clifford T. Ward. Through their excellent website, they very much keep alive his extensive catalogue of work, spanning his career of 40 plus years. It's very striking just how many people do really care about his music!

· As a testament to his timeless genuis, in June 2002, Clifford finished above The Beatles in a BBC Radio 2 poll on the best music released during the Queen's reign. Unfortunately Clifford wasn't around to witness this as he sadly died in December 2001 at the age of 57.

This is the most complete of all the Clifford T Ward albums and also the second album issued in 1973 - making this his third album in about eighteen months.

This was also the last album where Clifford T employed on an exclusive basis his regular rhythm team of Ken Wright (drums), Terry Edwards (bass) and Derek Thomas (guitars) with Clifford T himself playing all keyboards.

Clifford T along with Richard Hewson (the latter of The Beatles and original arranger of Nick Drake's "Five Leaves Left" fame) also share arrangement credits here.

"Scullery" opens the album, was the first single taken from it and features some lovely simple acoustic guitar from Thomas.

"Not Waving - Drowning" is a track that he revisited with a different, slower more staccato arrangement on "Waves" from 1976.

"Are You Really Interested?" is another simple CTW melody and lyrical insight into a relationship perhaps going down the pan but, with the optimism that it could be resolved if they could both communicate with each other.

"A Sad Cliche" is quite a prescient outlook on how a young girl from a 'good family' could end up in court and in the coda features a judge expressing to the court why she is sending the miscreant down for corrective punishment.

"To An Air Hostess" is another lovely and melodic, witty song which shows that Clifford T. also had a sense of humour when he sings, "I wanted to give her a copy of my record but, I did not have the self-confidence".

"All Modern Conveniences" is rather a sad song (about an old lady with lots of memories of her house, being forced to move - supposedly under a compulsory purchase order - into a 'better' home with 'all modern conveniences').

This album tends to be overshadowed by "Home thoughts", his best known album, but if you play them now you soon realise how unfair that comparison actually is. "Mantle Pieces" has been a part of my life for over 35 years as a casette, a vinyl album and now, finally, as a wonderfully re-mastered CD. It includes many CTW classics including Scullery (his 2nd top 40 single,) Not waving Drowning and All Modern Conveniences. In its original form the album was 40 minutes of perfection ; now it includes two bonus tracks that were never released on an album - "Jayne from Andromeda Spiral" is here in its single mix, very different to the version on "No more rock'n'roll" , and there is the further bonus of its b-side "Maybe I'm right", both of these would have graced any album. For a while Clifford T Ward was being called the "new Paul McCartney - buy this fantastic CD and it is very easy to see why!

If you have even *heard* of CTW (let alone in any positive light) then this is a must-have album, it's one of his very best at the height of his powers. If you haven't heard of CTW, then this is one of his best and typifies his style - his unusual, conversational lyrics and clever harmonic construction. If you don't like this, then you never will like CTW. I am so glad it's now available to download but would have liked to see a release on CD too. Only "Home Thoughts" and "Escalator" can rival its quality, and there are very few low points, it's that strong. Even All Modern Conveniences was broadcast as a single on BBC's Top of the Pops in '73. Purchase sans regrettes.

Remember listening to this album on an 8 track player in the car to primary school, only after hearing a track recently on Radio 2 made me check out Clifford T, glad I did, I will be buying more albums from this late great genius.

I was really dissappointed that the quality I obtained when trying to copying my cassette just didn't cut it so buying this was well worth the cash. See also Home Thoughts From Abroad
