Now back in the Empire following their sojourn overseas, Gotrek and Felix head north, to aid the men of the Empire in their fight against the invading Chaos hordes. Stopping off in Nuln, they meet up with dwarf engineer Malakai Makaisson, who is helping the Imperial war effort by transporting cannons to the frontline on his airship, The Spirit of Grungni. After a series of nasty accidents, it becomes clear that saboteurs are at work - can our heroes find the villains in time to save the day?

After the letdown of his previous book Orcslayer I wasn't expecting much of this, the ninth Gotrek & Felix book and the second by Nathan Long, but thankfully it was much better than I was expecting. Manslayer sees Gotrek & Felix return to Nuln after on their way north to join the fight against the hordes of Archaon. While in the city they are reunited with old friends before uncovering a plot that could spell disaster for the forces of the Empire.

Manslayer is a great improvement over Nathan Longs previous Gotrek & Felix book but is still somewhat less entertaining than those written by William King. I feel that the author has got the feel of some of the characters now, especially Felix and Ulrika, but he still seems to have trouble getting Gotrek right. Nathan Longs portrayal of Nuln's vampire coven is also good and his plot, although simple and predictable, is nonetheless entertaining enough to keep you turning the pages. Overall this was a fun book that shows some good promise for the future of the series.

After the disappointment of Orcslayer, parts of the Manslayer are good though not a patch on the first few Gotrek and Felix books. At points in the book you can see some of the characteristic that have built up throughout the series in Manslayer though in other parts the behaviour of the main characters/manner of Gotrek/Felix is way off the mark. Hopefully this current writer continues to improve which each 'slayer' book but it might be helpful if he tried to retain the fell of the first books.

This is a very late review indeed, but to cut to the chase I was gravely disappointed with Orcslayer and thought that the Gotrek & Felix series would suffer from the author transition from William King to Nathan Long - at first Orcslayer just felt wrong; the timeline, the characters etc. But even though i felt that way i also found Orcslayer to be quite entertaining and a very different direction for the series indeed, almost sci-fi. So i gave this book, Manslayer, a chance and all i can say is that it was a fantastic experince - i was surprised because it was almost like reading a William King book with the exception of that it was obvious that a new author with his own trademarks had entered the fray and gave his own artistic flair on the matter. It was the same ol' feeling again where I could completely absorb the book and live myself into the Warhammer universe with almost no chance of putting the book down. After this book i was eagerly awaiting the next book, Elfslayer, and after that Shamanslayer - engaging plots, fantastic and detailed writing etc. Overall conclusion is that this book and forth is definitely worth being in your Gotrek & Felix collection!

Worth a read but could be better...
For me the series needs a new lease of life. The storytelling is less vivid than in the King books, and the plot here seemed pretty shallow and unremarkable. Read more
