Book Description

3 Sep 2009 0141190981 978-0141190983

Shanghai, 1927, and revolution is in the air. As the city becomes caught up in violence and bloodshed, four people's lives are altered inexorably: idealist and intellectual Kyo Gisors, one of the leaders of the Communist insurrection, who is also trying to deal with his own marital strife; Ch'en Ta Erh, an assassin and terrorist brutalized by killing; Baron de Clappique, a French gambler, opium dealer and gun runner; and Russian revolutionary Katov, who calmly watches events unfold, until he has to make the ultimate sacrifice. Each of these men must try to resolve their personal conflicts amid political turmoil, conspiracy and betrayal.

Man's Fate, first published in 1933 and now reissued as a Penguin Modern Classic, is a gripping story of conflict, free will and our power to shape our destiny.

About the Author

Andre Malraux (1901-1976) was a novelist and politician. In the middle and late thirties Malraux became one of France's leading anti-Fascists and after a distinguished career in the Second World War he became involved in the Gaullist movement. After de Gaulle's withdrawal from politics in 1969, Malraux continued to be active both on the intellectual and the international front, until his death in 1976.

Philip Gourevitch is the editor of The Paris Review, and a long-time staff writer for The New Yorker. He is the author of The Ballad of Abu Ghraib, which originally appeared as Standard Operating Procedure (2008), A Cold Case (2001) and We Wish To Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed With Our Families: stories from Rwanda (1998), winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and the Guardian First Book Award.

4.0 out of 5 stars A timeless study of Man's revolutionary spirit. 13 Nov 2001
Format:Paperback
As Camus' favourite author, Malraux certainly comes highly recommended and one can see why on reading this book. Certain parts are particularly pertinent currently after Sept 11th as he delves into the fanatical mind of a terrorist planning a suicide attack, but this also holds up regardless of recent events. The political machinations behind revolutions is also revealed and the telling comment that a great and good man will only become powerful if he throws aside his principles in favour of hypocrisy is reminiscent of Harry Lime's speech in "The Third Man" where he demonstrates that society can only flourish under suffrage.
One complaint is that at times this book was a bit wordy and the dialogue was hard to follow at times. Also my knowledge of the various political and economic institutions of late 1920s China is rather limited so I would have benefited from an introduction that explained their roles. This still remains a fine work by a man who should know after going over to China himself and also taking part in the Spanish Civil War.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Pessimistic Point of View 16 Oct 2010
By DRFP
Format:Paperback
A novel that eventually won me over. Malraux's prose is sometimes a little too philosophical and poetic to the extent it takes you out of the action. Characters mumbling certain lines out loud also seems far fetched. Yet the writing itself is good and for all the personal opinions and life philosophy Malraux inserts into Man's Fate he does succeed in crafting a quite moving novel. It's a slow burner but by the time of the inevitable outcome I couldn't help but feel for the various sad fates that awaited the cast.

Infused with his own outlook and written with obvious sympathy for the Communist movement in China (and the terrorists within it) this novel might not appeal to all but it's certainly one worth giving a try.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shanghai 5 Oct 2010
By webster
Format:Paperback
My father was in the British Army in Shanghai in 1927, and I wanted to know why. Having read a recent history of China from 1850 to the present day, I knew the background to 1927. This novel, 'Man's Fate' brings that time to life in all its political and social intensity. But it is important to remember that it is a novel, and that Andre Malraux was not actually present in Shanghai at that time. He was in China, so it is well researched. However, if I had not read some history beforehand it would have been meaningless. Very much a novel of its time.
