Format: Audio CD
Comprising of four soundtrack collaborations between Gainsbourg and legendary French composer and arranger Michel Colombier, much of the material here is previously unreleased. Between 1964 and 1968 Colombier was Gainsbourg's co-composer, co-producer and orchestral arranger and together, as this release testifies, they produced some breathtaking music. The music here is almost a psychédélique / classical hybrid and is possibly best described as the missing link between the output of Ennio Morricone and David Axelrod around the same period. Straight-up classical orchestral music, trippy orchestral music, psychedelic, Ye-Ye, Hammond organ, tight percussion, heavy bass lines, breathy vocals - it's all here and so much more besides. The imagination and skill in evidence here is staggering and it's impossible to select highlights.

This is a very welcome addition to Universal France's 'Écoutez le cinéma' series and is an essential purchase for Gainsbourg aficionados. Clocking in at just over 60 minutes, the CD is housed in a neat digipak with a 16 page inlay containing detailed liner notes in both French and English. The track list:

It's on the same level as his work around the awesome 'Melody Nelson' suite. By any standards a class and beautiful soundtrack, cool, compellingly portentous, orchestrated - dead groovy!
