Quality material from the prog rocker, although this album tends to lean more towards the ballads rather than the rock side of things. If you're in the mood it's brilliant. If you want something a bit noisier, go back to ELP!

Manoeuvres was released without hardly any publicity and no tour to back it up which was a pity the album includes some great guitar work again from Gary Moore and some superb Greg Lake vocals and songs. Why Asia (I am a fan) gained so much success compared to Greg Lake's solo albums I have no idea; I can only assume the hatred of all things Emerson/Lake related at that time. If you haven't heard this album it is definitely worth a purchase, strangely even friends who don't like the bombast or flash of ELP love Greg Lake's solo albums. If you bought it fiorst time and don't use vynil this is a great opportunity yo catch up I bet it isn't around for long. From the opening power chords of the title track that signal Side one as the rocky side then on to ; Too young to Love , Paralysed and I don't wanna... fit the bill perfectly only one slower number and one of the weakest on the album; A woman like you . On side 2 we have a slower pace but thats no bad thing . The opening track starts with keyboards and is probably something Love Beach should have sounded like Its you you've gotta believe - We'll try Greg. Famous Last Words next and probably the weak track of side 2 can't get away with the woo-oo-woo-oo backing vocals bit of a filler still we then move back into decent territory Slave to Love no not the Ferry song , we then have two cracking ballads to finish; Haunted a great vocal when Lake announces what a fool he's been and that silence is pain. Next we have a masterpiece which I would prefer to hear more than practically any ELP ballad; I don't know why i still love you is 5 minutes of sheer class again a Great Vocal and just a whole lot better than the likes of The smile has left your eyes !Read more ›

I was one of the people who bought this album as a teenager who had just got into ELP a bit late. It was a surprise as I hadn't heard his first solo effort.
The heavier rock guitar was not expected though works well on the opening track but side two is all ballad related and is a lovely showcase for that amazing voice.

Highlight without a doubt is You Got To Believe which Is what ELP would have sounded like moving into the eighties had they stayed together. Slave To Love is brooding and powerful lyric and my second fav.

What seems to be the problem is the rather sterile atmosphere of smooth production and session men playing perfectly and an absence of Greg's acoustic guitar style which was something that had help me cope with the bombast of ELP as I was getting into them at the time.

Greg had a sizable ego during ELP but seemed to lose it post ELP by letting people play his music and write his songs much like Rod Stewart did in the post 70's and it's a real shame as his talent and songwriting ability is enormous and would have benefited by being more to the fore on both solo albums. That said his voice is in great form and 3-4 excellent songs make this a worthy purchase for any fan or Mr Lake.
