Product Description

Product Description

Suspended from the Met after killing a rapist in a fight, John Manners breaks down. Although the death was caused in self-defence, why was Manners seen beating the body after death? Then Manners overhears a murder being plotted but doesn't realise it is his own.

From the Author

A worthy comeback.
Buy this book! After a long period in hiding I hope my latest effort will not disappoint. Copies of 'Dependence Day' now appear to have disappeared from the bookshop shelves, so don't let me down. Don't misinterpret this as desperation-there's nothing wrong with a bit of free advertising. Happy New Year! --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars deep, dark, but compulsively funny, 28 Jan 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Manners (Paperback)
Manners is a far cry from Newman's earlier Dependence Day (which was excellent if a little 'light weight'), here the darker, nastier side of life is explored with an intensity that compels and exhausts the reader but drags you screaming towards it's unpleasant finale. Read it twice and they'll lock you away! I loved it though, Mr Newman can do no wrong in my book (until he reads it). Here's to many more where this came from...

5.0 out of 5 stars If you are able to pretend you've slept - read this book!, 17 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Manners (Paperback)
I loved Robert Newman's TV work and was looking forward to some belly laughs worthy of industrial strength incontinence pads.

I was wrong to do so!

I found his account of the tortured life led by this wretched human (who I wanted to adopt by the end of the book) so dark that I lost all sense of time and just about managed to fool myself that the hours spent reading the book instead of sleeping or working were justified. Manners is a fantastic read. I sincerely recommend it. WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T READ THE BACK COVER UNTIL YOU'VE FINISHED THE BOOK!

5.0 out of 5 stars At times infuriating yet utterly engaging., 7 July 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Manners (Paperback)
Robert Newman's second novel is courageous in subject matter, yet brilliantly executed, combining the very personal account of a police officer's demise and eventual breakdown, with a fervent social conscience. 'Manners' is also shrewdly researched, presenting an honest and surprisingly new slant on police work - a far cry from the hackneyed 'bobby on the beat' that we've become so accustomed to on TV. PC John Manners is a modern day Byronic hero. He'll charm you then let you down at every turn, proving the novel at times infuriating yet utterly engaging. The character quickly slips through your fingers and then drags you down with him into the dark and unsettling world of life without structure or responsibility, chillingly reminding you that actually it's not that far down.
