5.0 out of 5 stars DO BELIEVE the hype 18 April 2005
Format:Audio CD
Quicksand are one of the few bands in the post hardcore world to be genuinely innovative. I bought Slip (the first Quicksand album) shortly after its release and have just replaced my vinyl copy with the CD. So good was the first album that I pre-ordered this album. Not as immediately engaging as Slip but after repeat play it proves a finer album still.
The closest comparison is probably Fugazi's masterfully understated later albums but there are elements that are almost Floyd like, balanced against a weight that few bands can muster.
This is destined not to be appreciated by many of the fans of the bands who have helped return Quicksand to the public arena for the simple reason that the subtlety which marked them out against their competitors (Helmet and so on) a decade ago is largely missing from the juvenile ranting of most Nu-Metal.
Invest your dosh and more importantly your patience in Manic Compression and Slip and I gaurantee your listening world will be a wider and better place.

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspirational release 10 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Damn I wish Quicksand were still going. One of the most underated bands of the 90's, they paved the way for the crossover of emo and hardcore, and also managed to influence many of today's metal bands such as Deftones and Glassjaw. Amazing vocals coupled with great guitar and basslines sure hit hard, yet in a thought provoking way with lyric themes based on isolation and morals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heavy 23 April 2004
By D.O.S.
Format:Audio CD
A fine album by a very fine and missed band, Rival Schools formed from the ashes (as did Handsome) - very influential and worth buying just to hear those heavy Mesa driven riffs and an insight into what "alternative" music was once all about

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't Believe The Hype 20 Feb 2005
Format:Audio CD
I bought this album because I love Rival Schools, and the reviews of Quicksand all reckon they were even better. Wrong! If you want to listen to monotonous, bass-heavy melody-lacking music you're in luck. None of what makes Rival Schools' United By Fate the fantastic experience it is is present here. Walters voice drones through the songs, at times barely audible over the repetitive guitars. If you want to check out some truly inspiring, alternative music, try Rival Schools or The Shins, but if you must buy this album, don't say you weren't warned...
