Love kills 5 Nov 2008
By Mr. Jonathon T. Beckett TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
Two serial killers, Joe Spinelli who murdered those he thought responsible for his mother's death and Beth Windsor the 'Hitch-Killer' meet at the Edgemore Institute for the Criminally Insane. After suffering much abuse at the hands of the staff, they decide to escape, making a pact that from now on they will only kill those who deserve it.
This is a twisted little film, a love story between two people who have a hobby that they share with eachother-killing people. Despite their terrible acts, its to the directors credit that you will find yourself feeling great sympathy for the couple. This is also partly due to two terrific performances from Jeff Fahey and Kellie Waymire. Its also a great ascerbic black comedy, poking fun at the Mental Health system and for the most part it succeeds. This is a very fine film. 4 out of 5

I used to dislike Mr Fahey to the point of perversion but in this movie he's won me over. It tells the tail of love in extremely strange surroundings. A secure unit for killers of a mental persuasion. Fahey plays Joe Spinelli, a man with psychopathic tendencies who is locked up in an asylum for the criminally insane run by a corrupt Matron Knull (Leslie Easterbrook) and her sadistic guards, such as Bull, under the unseeing eye of Dr. Denton Speck the institutions feckless governor. Beating and solitary are the norm. It is here that Joe meets Beth (Kellie Waymire) and love blooms between the two. Kelly has a philosophy for life, and death, that you only get caught if the wrong people are killed. To cut a long storyshore our two lovers manage to escape and live an idyllic life in the quiet of the country. The humour is dark and satisfying for the sight of Joe as Christ on the cross to Beths delusion that she is the long lost daughter of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. I had a good hour and a half with Maniacts and found it both touching and outrageous, but very tongue-in-cheek. Get it. You'll have a laugh.

Joe is just your average homicidal maniac and Beth is pretty much your regular serial killer. Both are serving a life sentance in the Edgemare Institute for the Criminally Insane when true love blossoms for the psychopathic pair. Following a whirlwind courtship, the deadly duo decide it's time to escape and lead a happy, normal life.... if they could only stop killing people!
This film is great. It is brilliantly acted. Nothing beats this. Just watch it to find out the depth of the intensity. It also proves that love can survive in any environment.
