Summer 1974: and four friends have planned a weekend hiking and camping in the remote forest of northern Europe. At an innocuous truck stop they pick up an anxious-looking hitchhiker. Almost instantly, it's clear that she's more than simply unnerved. She's terrified of something... or someone. Without warning the group is brutally ambushed and when the survivors come too, deep in the secluded forest, miles from civilisation the first thing they hear is the sound of a hunting horn. Their nightmare is far from over. In fact it has only just begun. The game is on and they realise to their absolute horror that they are the prey...

It's 1974 and four friends are driving to a remote part of the woods, they've planned a weekend of hiking and relaxing. They stop to get gas and food at a cafe/gas station, they get into an altercation with a few of the locals. There's a woman at the cafe who seems shaken and alone, so they end up giving her a lift. A little while later the woman becomes ill so they pull over to let her out, they are then ambushed by a group of 3 rednecks and knocked unconscious. They awake in the middle of the woods, they have become the prey for these hillbilly hunters.

Not very original, you instantly think of movies like Deliverance, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Wrong Turn, Southern Comfort. Manhunt is made in a way that it's often quite unsettling and hard to watch, the movie I was most reminded of was the first 45 minutes or so of the original Last House On The Left. There's no backstory to the killers at all, we have no idea who they are or why they're doing it. Some people like to know exactly who these people are, I don't really think it's important and it's keeps them mysterious.

The acting is good without being spectacular, there's no nudity but there's a couple of great gore scenes. There's a moment with a shotgun and an ankle that made me wince ever so slightly. It's Norwegian with english subtitles, I know that subtitles put some people off for some reason, but after the first 20 minutes there's not that much dialogue anyway. The direction by Patrik Syversen was really good considering it was his first feature film, the film isn't quite 80 minutes so the pace very rarely drops and there's plenty of tension.

The cinematography was absolutely sublime and probably the best aspect of the movie. It looks fantastic and the colour palette is great, it's shot in dull browns and yellows that give it a good look and it feels like the 70's. The music also gets credit, there's some nice songs that put us in the era it was set and the David Hess song Wait For The Rain appears. I wasn't all that keen on one of the characters becoming Rambo half way through, and the ending left it a little to open ended and didn't seem that well thought out.

The dvd has no extras at all which was very disappointing, it would have been nice to have a commentary or a making of. I really enjoyed Manhunt, and if a little more effort had gone into giving us some extras I probably would have given it 4 stars. If you like these type of movies with people getting hunted in the woods, then I can't see why you wouldn't enjoy this one.

Really enjoyed this flick.

It evoked a similar vibe of 70s horror for me that Ti West's excellent House of the Devil evoked for 80s horror. In fact, this didn't feel like a homage to 70s slasher genre as much as an actual film *made* in the 70s.

Very good stuff indeed and ridiculously good value at £2.95.

"..GREAT HORROR.." 23 April 2012

norwegian horror flicks get better and better, this is no way a bad film, if you love gory violent disturbing films then manhunt is the one for you. it may have been done before yes, but by amateurs, this is a fantastic film and has the formula just right, very bloody, good simple story, a must for real hardcore horror fans. it may not run for long but still worth the buy.

Norwegian wood, without a chainsaw.
I really quite liked this; it's a horribly derivative Scandinavian take on any number of horror/slasher films from the 70`s, 80`s and even a few contemporary ones, but it's quite... Read more

Manhunt was a clever idea at its time, very dated now, slow and plods along. Worth buying to see an older ITV drama. Read more

Manhunt
Not a bad little film. Usual story line of lost in the middle of nowhere and getting targeted by inbreds. Worth a watch.

Not breathtakingly original, but lots to like
A terrifying and tidy little slasher. If you enjoyed Eden Lake, but found yourself frustrated with the coincidences and plot flaws, and then this might float your boat. Read more
