5.0 out of 5 stars Allen's Masterpiece 11 April 2007
Although this is not Woody Allens funniest film, it is his best and its one of the best films ever made. It is funny though, but not in the same way as his 'early funny' ones!

Woody Allen's brilliant writing is there right from the start of the film as we listen to Issac's (Woodys character) opening monologue rewritten over and over, to a selection of stunning images of New York.

The film is in black and white and all the better for it. Somehow the cinematographer Gordon Willis has captured everything that is beautiful about New York in this film. The use of music is also key to this film. Its nearly all George Gershwin and the combination has never been matched in the history of cinema.

The plot is tangled web of Issacs relationships with women, and as you'd expect with Woody Allen its never quite right. The leading women in the film, Diane Keaton, Meryl Streep (who is vicious) and Mariel Hemingway are all superb. In the end Issac has to make a decision over who he really wants to be with and this leads to two great scenes which unless you were born with your heart removed will leave you choked.

This is a truly great film in all respects and is an essential addition to any film fans collection. Sadly there are no extras with the DVD, but it is widescreen.

3.0 out of 5 stars A West 28 Dec 2012
By A. West
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
The film itself is great that is why I have awarded it three stars, but the quality is abysmal.

Why it is called a blue-ray is beyond me, the picture resolution is very poor and the sound is not much better as it tends to continually vary from very loud to very soft.
Also , it has never happened before fortunately, but about half way through the the film the screen divided into two,
one half was normal and the other half developed a blue tinge,I then played a 'known to be good' DVD and thankfully the effect had disappeared.
Needless to say this won't be played in my equipment again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Woody Allen's masterpiece 5 April 2013
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
Much as I love 'Hannah and Her Sisters,' 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona' and 'Midnight in Paris', for my money this is Woody Allen's absolute finest hour. As well as being the usual Woody Allen comedy of sexual manners it is also a love song or visual poem to the city of New York and specifically, the eponymous borough. Ravishingly shot in gorgeous black and white, the city has never looked better, especially in the opening and closing scenes of the movie. The city is a major character in the movie and Woody's genuine love for the place adds a magic glow to the whole undertaking.

The blu-ray version (an American import which is very fortunately a region-free disc) allows the cinematography to be seen in its full splendour. (Why so few Allen movies are unavailable on blu-ray in the uk is a mystery to me, esp. 'Midnight in Paris!')

- according to American film critic ANDREW SARRIS. Granted, this is high praise indeed! But once you surrender swiftly to WOODY ALLEN's most achingly romantic, poignant film, listen to the lush and beautiful GEORGE GERSHWIN music score, marvel at GORDON WILLIS' shimmering monochrome photography of the Big Apple at its most seductive, and I guarantee you will find it very hard to disagree with Sarris' famous comment.
Add in to the mix DIANE KEATON and MARIEL HEMINGWAY at their (respectively) funniest and most youthfully heart-warming, some of the sharpest, most hilarious ALLEN dialogue on celluloid ("he had...the sexual prowess of a coiled jungle cat"!!), and, quite frankly film fans, you simply MUST have this wonderful film in your collection.
Finally, before I really do over-eulogise over WOODY's masterpiece (a minority view but one I've held for 25 years) it is also worth noting that ALLEN's portrait of middle-class New York life remains unsurpassed. For those of you fortunate enough to have visited this great city, you will instantly recognise both the well known landmarks and, and quite probably, even some of the lesser known but distinctly recognisable MANHATTAN nightclubs, cafes and other locations that give the Big Apple its lasting charm and character.
Watch this film and cherish it's swooning romanticism and sharp analysis of middle class intellectual life; you will be delighted and want to watch it every time you see or read anything about NYC again...

5.0 out of 5 stars You Have To Have A Little Faith In People 28 Feb 2014
Format:DVD observes Mariel Hemingway’s (now) 18-year old student, Tracy, to Woody Allen’s 'failing’ writer, Isaac Davis, to conclude Allen’s 1979 masterpiece in what is, for me, one of cinema’s greatest endings. It’s a nice observation, as well, since Isaac (and, no doubt, co-screenwriter Allen) finally realises that (thus far, at least) Tracy has shown herself to be the most trustworthy of all his close confidants. In fact, Manhattan wears its romantic heart on its sleeve and, whilst it blends typical Allen gags (there are as many great one-liners here as in any of his films) with the more ‘sophisticated’ film-making began with Annie Hall (and continued through the likes of Crimes And Misdemeanours, Hannah And Her Sisters and Stardust Memories), for me, it is equally memorable for its many moments of poignant romance (indeed Allen puts in probably his finest all-round acting turn here).

Of course, Manhattan is a magnificent sensorial experience as well – one that can probably be at least partially appreciated by those who are not fans of 'Allen comedy’ – with Gordon Willis’ superb black-and-white cinematography (e.g. the stunning dawn shot of Isaac and Diane Keaton’s Mary Wilkie sitting on a park bench beside the Brooklyn Bridge as Someone To Watch Over Me plays in the background) and with Allen’s chosen Gershwin score (which, it could be argued, is an 'easy win’ for the film, but is nonetheless perfectly suited and, of course, exquisitely romantic).
